Apple Store (iPod) experience

[Pepper, Chris]Chris Pepper (apparently) - 08:30am Feb 25, 2005 PST
via email

I ordered a 60gb iPod photo last night, for $599 less
educational discount (M9586LL/A, including photo Dock, FW cable, USB
cable, & video cable). Apple confirmed via email at 10:52pm, with the
yesterday's price.

This mornings new cheaper SKU is M9830LL/A, and doesn't
include FW or video cables, or the Dock -- but it's $150 cheaper
(list or educational). I checked the Order Status page this morning,
and it showed what I'd ordered, and the original (higher) price.

So I called to cancel and re-order at the lower price, and
the (very nice) rep I spoke to told me that she showed the original
(more complete) SKU, with a $120 discount off the price. I'm
apparently getting a better price than last night, and a better
bundle price than I could order today. We'll see what actually
arrives in my hot little hands, but I note that the changes I made
today are visible in the Order Status page now (I added AppleCare and
the remote + phones, which I forgot last night), and I still see
M9586LL/A (to ship by March 1st).

On a less encouraging note, I'm returning my 1gb shuffle
because disk performance is pathological (see my previous message). I
spoke to a support rep, who offered a URL explaining the difference
between flash and disk. They're taking it back (in under 30 days) for
a 10% restocking fee...

Re: Apple Getting Loose?

I went an attempted to buy an iPod today on the 3 months same as cash credit promotion. I was a bit surprised to see that the bank behind the Apple Credit Account has changed from MBNA to Juniper Bank or Direct Merchants Credit Card Bank.

I was initially surprised to see this as Juniper and Direct Merchants are a bit more sub-prime in the lending market that you'd think Apple would want to be associated with. I always thought the MBNA association fit because MBNA prides themselves on their level of service. (also the level of people that they deny credit to)

But in light of Apple's increasing market exposure the ability to have a bank with looser credit granting policies makes sense as many people cannot make a purchase of a computer without utilizing credit, the more people you can offer credit to, the more people you'll be able to sell a computer to.

That's good news.

I backed out of a Apple Credit Application (I ended up just putting the
iBook on my own credit card) after finding out the bank behind it was
MBNA, who I consider to be scum of the Earth. I'll _never_ do business
with them again after my experiences with them.

From: "Hazelwood Farm"

In reference to:

"**Apple Store (iPod) experience** -- Apple does right by a
reader who had ordered a 60 GB iPod just before the price
drop."

I have had a similar experience. I had ordered an iPod mini just the
week before the new mini' came out. Apple emailed that they were
reducing the price which they were charging me, by $50.00 and today I
received another email as follows...

To Our Valued Apple Customer:
Previously, we emailed you to let you know that we would be shipping
your iPod mini at a new lower price. Due to an unexpected supply
limitation, we are now in the process of upgrading your order to the
new iPod mini at the same price! Because our new iPod mini does not
ship with the same accessories, we will be including them as separate
items at no extra charge:

M8636G/A - iPod Power Adapter Kit
M9127G/A - iPod FireWire Kit

Just another reason why I am a long time, Apple advocate!!

Yours,
James Bryan
