I know the memory type is DDR 333MHz or PC-2700. A 1 GB chip from Crucial is $227 for non-ECC or $299 for ECC (Apple wants $425 for their 1GB upgrade.)

If anyone wants to test if the Mac mini will do 2GB, the chip is a staggering $870, crucial only offers ECC of that size.

Alternate suggestions for places to buy reliable memory would be welcome (after all the problems I've seen Mac's have with inferior memory I'm reluctant to buy the absolute cheapest around.)

I've had great luck with datamem.com. Good prices, never had a bad chip over 4 years of ordering for servers, desktops, laptops, etc.

Their price is on the 1GB chip is $199 for non-ECC, which is fine for the mini I believe.

or

Apple has also just (today?) lowered their prices on build to order. 8x
SuperDrives are $100, and 1GB of RAM is $325.

I actually did have some PowerBook memory from them go bad (failed
the Apple Hardware Test). They provided super service however, I
called for replacement mid-afternoon on the West Coast of the US,
providing my invoice and identification from the memory card. I had
the replacement memory materials and instructions for return of the
old memory the next morning. Given that they are in New Hampshire (US
East Coast), I was quite impressed.

I've successfully used these vendors for Mac memory—

I would agree about Data Memory systems (Datamem.com). I've used them
for years and their service has been great. I had some eMacs several
years ago that were picky about the memory they used and they shipped
out three different sets, each one by overnight shipping until one
worked.
