Replacement for Tex-Edit Plus?

[joecab]joecab - 12:18pm Sep 4, 2009 PST

I've been using Tex-Edit Plus for years but unfortunately it looks like it's not going to make it to the Snow Leopard age. It's based on the WASTE engine which hasn't seen an update in a very long time, so I sadly have to find a replacement.

Here's what I like about Tex-Edit Plus and what I need in a similar app:

1. Pasted-in text keeps its general formatting (bold, italics, underlines, text color)

2. A quick and easy clean-up command to delete extra spaces and line spaces, smarten/unsmarten quotes, etc.

3. Good AppleScript support

4. Universal or Intel-only -- I'm keeping Rosetta off my system

Suggestions?

Even if you had used Rosetta, Tex-Edit Plus (TEP) would not have
worked. Unfortunately, there is a flaw in the code where the program
suddenly hangs and you have to reopen it. It appears there will be
no fix so it seems TEP has been assigned to the software graveyard.

There is nothing I know of that offers the simplicity of TEP. There
are several high powered text editors out there including Text
Wrangler, Editra, and emacs. Use those with caution as they require a
good understanding to exploit all their capabilities.

Why? It's only called when needed and takes up very little room.

Your best bet might be TextEdit (Apple's). It's AppleScript support is strong enough that you should be able to mimic the best of Tex-Edit.

Man, I'm going to miss Tex-Edit. It was the best!

The developer says the current version (Jedit X 2.15) works just fine under
Snow Leopard. It's true that it is not a 64-bit application (yet), but he says
64-bit-ness is not really important for a text editor, so it is not really an
urgent issue. He says he will work on an update of Jedit X,
after finishing the OpenMenu X Rev. 2 update release (real soon).

OpenMenu X Rev.2
<http://www.artman21.com/en/openmenu_x/opx_beta.html>
is a Snow Leopard compatible "system menu environment".
It overcomes the limitation of Snow Leopard's Services/Contextual Menu
that Matt mentioned in his article "What's New in Snow Leopard"
<http://db.tidbits.com/article/10504>

According to the developer:
You can invoke OpenMenu X popup menu even on Snow Leopard Finder or 64-bit applications that are not compatible with the contextual menu plugins.

He is currently busy finalizing the OpenMenu X Rev. 2 release (he hadn't know
Snow Leopard had been to be released early, before September), but after that,
he plans to start working on an update to Jedit X, as far as I heard.

cheers,

Mark

On the plus side, you get to keep calling it Tex.

On the other hand, this may not be the TeX you were looking for :-)

Thanks for all the suggestions so far -- keep 'em coming if you have them.

I should have been more clear: Yes Tex-Edit Plus will run on Snow Leopard, but not without Rosetta installed since WASTE isn't being updated. I'm making a clean break and NOT installing Rosetta.

Oops I just read the posting about TEP NOT running on Snow Leopard even with Rosetta installed. My mistake. Guess I would have been forced to switch to a new app after all.

Has anyone consulted with the owner of Tex-Edit Plus? I think the Tex part refers to Texas, the home base of the SW owner.

Is there some particular task where it hangs? I haven't used Tex-Edit
Plus in quite some time but I have what I think is the latest build
(4.9.8). I've been using it for the last few days with 10.6 and Rosetta
and haven't experienced any problems. I've just been doing some simple
text files and executing a few simple scripts, but so far so good.
Maybe it shouldn't be buried just yet?

Re: Replacement for Tex-Edit Plus?

I'm a long time user of Tex-Edit also. Jedit looks like it could take the place of most of the things I use Tex-Edit for, even giving me some new useful features, but... The Quick Cleanup section of TE is very helpful for doing quick cleanup of text files that I'm moving between Mac, Windows and UNIX. I know it is a simple find and replace but having it as a one click edit is nice.

It looks like TE has not been updated for 2 years.

I was about to ask if anyone had actually *tried* Tex-Edit Plus under
Snow Leopard. I note that it isn't listed as an incompatible
application:

OS X 10.6 Compatibility List
http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/

and I haven't heard any complaints from anyone who has tried it.

I'm glad to hear that Tex-Edit Plus works under Snow Leopard. I've
looked at seven or eight other text editors, and none of them have
all the useful, and easy to use, text manipulation features that Tex-
Edit Plus has.

Re: Replacement for Tex-Edit Plus?

Like others here - The loss of Tex-Edit is a major bummer Certainly the most useful App I've ever had. Nonetheless, Since Tex-Edit is not going to be updated it's time to move on. - not sure about others, but I've got thousands of files with styled text and graphics that I need to replace (since all have a .txt extension) -- Hmm... maybe Doug Adams will write a conversion script.

IvanP: thanks for Jedit X suggestion it's about as close a replacement as I've seen -- tho still not quite there.

Some oddities: a gazzillion fonts were activated upon launching the app (OS 10.411 with FontAgent Pro font manager) Styles which I'd created in Office, moved to a Text-Edit doc appeared (but did not function) in the Jedit doc?!?

A couple disappointments: no search/replace of Styles (except an Applescript workaround -- hope author will develop this) No differentiation between Carriage return, newline character.

Anyway, I need to standardize on something soon... Any other App suggestions greatly appreciated. but so far Jedit x is the front runner.

Re: Replacement for Tex-Edit Plus?

Well, I was wrong (see last post below)! :-[ I just tried TEP and it
works flawlessly. I believe when I upgraded through the Leopard
series, the problem was fixed. So now I have TEP back and await what
happens when I switch over to Snow Leopard.

I wrote him a few months ago about an error I was getting and he indicated
that he was in school and didn't have the time to do any upgrades or fixes.

"Works" perhaps but hardly flawlessly. All my Tex-Edit Plus files
opened by default in TextEdit after I installed Snow Leopard. I could
still open them in their creator using Open With from the contextual
menu but attempting to save them to the Desktop as Tex-Edit Plus files
led to some rather quirky behaviour--all my desktop icons disappeared,
including those for my internal and external drives.

A Restart restored the icons, but the saved text file icon replaced
the Macintosh HD icon in the upper right, leaving a corner of the
latter to peek out from under the menu bar at the extreme upper left
of the screen. After trashing the text file and another Restart, all
apparently was restored to normal. All in all, I think it best to send
my Tex-Edit Plus files to live with Tiger in the basement eMac.

Jedit X has a quick platform-moving feature:
Open a document window.
Press Command-I. Then, a drawer opens to the right of the document window,
and in the drawer, there are two pop-up menus (among others)
"Encodings" and "Line endings"

Don't they do what you want?
(If incompatible characters are found when you try to switch character encodings,
it displays the incompatible characters, and offers search-and-replace for them.)

There's a program called Bean that might be promising. There's a Macworld article here:

<http://www.macworld.com/article/135436/2008/09/bean.html?lsrc=nl_mwgems_h_misc>

and Bean is found here:

It's free.

I loved Tex-Edit for the quick clean-up section, also. I now use TextWrangler for that functionality.
