iPhoto-like options for Mac OS 9?

[atlauren]atlauren (apparently) - 10:56pm Dec 28, 2004 PST

Does anyone know of iPhoto-type applications for use with Mac OS 9?

My mother-in-law got an HP Photosmart 435 for Christmas, and I'm
counting the moments until she calls and asks for help with the
camera and her 400Mhz grape iMac running Mac OS 9.something. The web
pages say it comes with "HP Photo & Imaging" software for Mac 9/10.1
and Windows, but I can't find useful information on just what "HP
Photo & Imaging" does.

Can anyone recommend good/decent/tolerable iPhoto-type software for OS 9?

Thanks,
Andrew

Take a look at iView Media (US$50):

http://www.iview-multimedia.com/products/media/index.php

I use the Pro version, which is pretty expensive these days, but it's
absolutely excellent. This page compares the Pro and regular versions:

Cheers,

iView Media: http://www.iview-multimedia.com/products/index.php is
definitely available for OS 9.

I think Adobe Photo Elements has a catalog function. Not sure if it
is available for OS 9.

Kodak's EasyShare software is free and does cataloging and basic
manipulation but requires OS X. It is wired to Ofoto to make Internet
sharing pretty easy.

If you can find an older version of iView Media (called iView
Multimedia, in those days, if I'm not mistaken) that should fit the
bill nicely. Easy to use, fast. Failing that, older versions of any
digital picture management software could help (Portfolio, Cumulus...).

My mother-in-law also has a 400MHz grape iMac and a digital camera. She was using Canon Imagebrowser for OS9 which came with her camera and while it has 90% of the functionality of iPhoto, she found the interface difficult and confusing (I know because I take all the tech-support calls). When we visited in November, she received the gift of an upgrade of an extra 256MB RAM, an 80GB HD (relatively easy to install in the iMac if you can use a screwdriver) and Panther.

OS X is really very useable on a G3, she is very happy and the tech support calls are now minimal thanks to a managed user account for her, vnc for remote troubleshooting for me and Apple's iApps which seem to suit her very well.

So OS X plus iPhoto may be a better solution for you than finding better OS 9 photo software.

Also take a look at QPict (by Rune Lindman - Media Asset Management)

http://www.qpict.net/ and www.qpict.com

$35 for the image cataloger/ manager/ manipulator ('view, catalog, organize, search, convert, and batch process images').

QPict versions are available for OS 8, 9, and X (including OS X 10.4 Tiger).
