Does anyone know anything definite about this? A couple of phone calls
to ATT were quite inconclusive; we were told that a representative
would be able to tell us for certain when we cancelled the contract,
which we're not ready to do yet.
It seems only right to me that if we pay our fee, we should own our
phones outright. But just because I believe it doesn't make it so
(even though it should). I'd be really grateful to know if anyone has
any official knowledge...
Cheers

Re: Cancelling ATT contracts
It's easy to unlock the phone. The question is if AT&T or any iPhone
service providers will let you use an unlocked phone or a phone they
didn't sell you, if you care about Visual Voicemail. If you don't, you
can use any GSM provider, no?

Perhaps worth noting that when Google Voice goes live for all
subscribers, you'll have access to a far superior visual voicemail
system regardless of what your carrier deigns to offer you.
I'm an early GV user (having been a GrandCentral subscriber), and it's
95% fantastic and 5% quibbles with the 1.0. I can't imagine ever using
any other way of organizing my voicemail and SMS.
Best,

Re: Cancelling ATT contracts
I have a 2G iPhone that neither Apple nor ATT sold me (I inherited it from a friend) and ATT was very happy to give me a contract (with no two-year restriction) to use it on their network.
