Problems with AirPort 4.1

[wick]wick (apparently) - 08:27am Dec 1, 2004 PST

Like many, I was tempted to update AEBS firmware to 5.5 and have WPA
capability on my WDS network. Unfortunately, once the genie update was
out of the bottle, a host of other issues have come up on a network
that worked great with 5.4 firmware.
The always a little flaky and unstable (but still very useful) Airport
Management tools show a constant cycling: "WDS established, WDS
expired" combined with a flashing right light that cycles like the WDS
(about one second intervals.) Anyone else have this problem with a WDS
network after installing the new firmware? The Apple discussion boards
show a lot of posts about problems with this firmware. I wish I had
waited.

AirPort 4.1 Fixes Encryption Irritation, Enables Remote Control

Responding to Wick's:
Anyone else have this problem with a WDS
network after installing the new firmware?

We did with the remote station (AirPort Express) but decided to perform
a "factory" reset (there are three resets on the Express, "hard",
"soft," and "factory"). The factory reset allowed us to use the
Installation Wizard again, from scratch, which fixed all the problems.
Without the factory reset, using only the hard or soft resets, Install
Wizard would continue to say there "already is" a network and a base
station. With factory reset the Express had to find the base station
again and link up. That seemed to solve all the WDS remote problems.

I had a problem with my AirPort Express (prior to firmware upgrade). I
thought I'd tried everything to fix it, including factory reset -- no luck.
I took it the local Apple Store Genius Bar where they did a factory reset
also, but she actually read the instructions on how to do it, while I just
glanced at them. To do an AirPort Express factory reset you have to unplug
it, hold in the reset button, plug it in, wait until 4 green flashes (this
was the step I missed, I waited about 10 seconds, but that wasn't long
enough). It takes about 3 hands to actually do this, but after this all
problems resolved. Installed firmware upgrade, no problems after that
either (but I don't use WDS).

Talking with the Apple genius she indicated that every "dead" AirPort
Express that has been brought into her has been fixed by a factory reset.
She has yet to exchange one.

Wirelss Printing Problem:

I tried the factory re-set and it worked. I spent 2 houurs on the phone with the Apple Help Desk. They couldn't help. Now it will recognize my Brother printer again as a Rendezvous printer but it still won't let me print wirelessly. I have had to plug the printer into a USB slot on the computer. Any fixes?
