FWIW, my freeware AS applet "Clone" does just that and has been available for
almost 6 years: <http://www.euronet.nl/~tekelenb/software/>.

Will it work under Tiger or Leopard?

Would it hurt you to try? It serves me fine under Tiger. It's open source, so
feel free to change it for Leopard if needed -- or to otherwise improve it to
your liking.

I opened and resaved it as an application bundle instead of a script
and it works fine for me under 10.5.6. I can't remember the exact
reason; but IIRC there's supposedly an advantage to saving it as an
application bundle instead.

True. Application bundles are like universal binaries: native on Intel; no
Rosetta. So, in theory at least, as a bundle it should be faster on Intel
Macs.
