Bizarre Mail icons behavior mizb (apparently) - 02:23am Oct 23, 2008 PSTvia emailI'm 98% blind in one eye. That freakin 2% plays all kinds of shenky shenanigans on me vision!
So...I'm in Mail, click slightly off-center on an icon for something and the icons on my toolbar vanish, leaving only a thin line of text. I NEED those icons! Even tho I (apparently) don't hit them dead on...I can't find a pref or way to put them back.
Then, days later--apparently I'm "off" again, because it turns the same magic switch, in true Apple fashion--and my icons reappear.
Can you help?

You must have Command-clicked on the little "chiclet" at the top-right
corner of the window. Command-click again, it cycles through the
different displays.
This works in all Apple apps with toolbars (including the Finder).
Alternately, you can choose View > Customize Toolbar and change the
setting regarding text and/or icons.

Press and hold the Ctrl key, then click and hold the mouse button on
the toolbar near the icons or text. This will bring up a pop-up menu
that allows you to choose to see icons , text or both.
Right-clicking with a two-button mouse will also work.

Showing and hiding toolbars is controlled by that tiny white
"jellybean" at the upper right corner of the window. You would not
believe how many calls we get (even from long-time mac users) who
suddenly loosed their toolbars and can't figure out how to get them
back.
I have been asked this question several times in the past few days, so
I have added a post to my blog, MacMousecalls, with illustrations.

Re: Bizarre Mail icons behavior
Well, I don't know how you mark yourself as 98% blind. I currently can't read the screen at all and depend on VoiceOver for almost everything I do on the Macintosh.
To resolve your problem, the Icons on the top of the window are called "Toolbars" and there should be a item in the "View" menu to make them visible.

The button in the far upper right will hide the icons AND the text. I
have no idea how you hid the icons and showed the text with a mouse
click. That is normally set via View -> Customize Toolbar.
