iWeb and MobileMe question

I published a website via iWeb on a MacBook that I left with my wife
in USA for a month. After that she will come to our expat home here in
Korea.

The problem is that I can't access it to edit it via the iWeb program
on my new MacBook here in Korea.

Does anyone know how I can do that?

Eric

You need the iWeb data files from the MacBook that you left with your
wife . . . they're in ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb I think. If
you can get her to send you that directory on CD, copy it to your new
MacBook and launch iWeb you'll be able to do it.

You could grab the contents of the site off of your iDisk (assuming
that's where you published the site to) . . . but I don't think the
iWeb folder keeps the files in web site format; it's in some sort of
iWeb data file IIRC and I don't think there's an 'import' option in
iWeb.

You need to have a local copy (in a special iWeb format) of the
website on the computer from which you wish to publish. For details
see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2548?viewlocale=en_US

Re: iWeb and MobileMe question

Thanks for the info about iWeb. It sounds like it is not a very good program if you want to control a website, since it seems the files are kept in an obscure way. Is that true?

My wife is a bit computer challenged. I wonder if I could get to her computer and download it from an internet connection, since I set it up and know the password?

Thanks for your help.

sure

rsync -az userCurrentlaptopIP:"Library/Application Support/iWeb" ~/
Library/Application\ Support/iWeb

Assuming you have ssh setup and open through your home's router.

Erm.. double check the path

You could also have your wife open the Application Support folder,
rclick on the iWeb folder and select "Compress iWeb" and email you the
iWeb.zip created.

Re: iWeb and MobileMe question

The web site up on the server once it is published is standard html.
It's only the local copy on your computer that is in the special
format. The local copy is at ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/
Domain; it's a package with all of the various web site pieces parts
inside of it.

The Domain file can be copied from one machine to another and it still
opens and can be modified.

You might be able to get to her computer and download it . . .
depending on whether you already set up the ability to connect.

If you're running Leopard on both machine, have properly setup Back to
My Mac, and most importantly if BTTM works for you) . .. then you can
connect back to her computer and copy the file to yours. Put it in the
right location and launch iWeb and it will see the file.

Unfortunately . . . BTTM has some growing issues and doesn't always
work. Not Apple's fault always but there are firewalls and routers and
ISPs involved.

If you don't have BTTM and did set up the ability to ssh back to her
machine then you can connect to it via command line . . . but that
also requires setup and if you didn't do it ahead of time you're out
of luck.

You should be able to walk your wife through copying it over to your
iDisk though . . .have her log in with the account used to create the
iWeb site, navigate to the path above, and drag copy the Domain file
to the iDisk. You can then grab it from there.

One final recommendation. Once you're at the other machine next
time . . . go ahead and set up the ability to get remote Access. I
have installed the free version off LogMeIn from www.logmein.com; this
allows me to connect via web browser and remote control any of the
machines at my home.
