Re: iPhone 3G car accessories
Is it possible to mention some products that can charge the iPhone 3G?
I tried this USB-thing, but nothing happened.

Re: iPhone 3G car accessories
I have had some success with a belkin FM tuner/charger. It still prompts me to try airplane mode, but charges and broadcasts fine once I cancel our of the annoying dialog.
This makes me wonder if Apple hasn't added a "genuine iphone accessory" chip that can only me obtained by proper licencees. As if the iPhone isn't Enoch of a walled garden already.

Re: iPhone 3G car accessories
I have a Denon ICE>Link (the original one for first dock connector iPod) which doesn't charge the iPhone 3G, but does still play. However, the software on it has been flaky for some time, occasionally locking out with the message "No Magazine" and necessitating pulling the fuse providing power to it (it's been doing that since before the iPhones).
So, I wouldn't be averse to getting a new ipod connector to plug in to the radio - it connects using the Sony CD changer interface into the factory fit Citroen Xantia radio, and can be controlled via the steering wheel controls.
What car kits are there which support charging? I don't need handsfree, as that is supplied by a separate bluetooth handsfree kit.
Cheers,
Joel

Re: iPhone 3G car accessories
I have heard various unconfirmed reports that the iPhone 3G charged OK before it was activated. I think I did this with my car kit, but I can't be certain. Can anyone confirm/deny this? If so, it would mean that there might be a software fix.
Have any of the sites which disassemble the iPhone 3G been able to confirm the charging circuitry? If the charging circuitry isn't there, then there is no chance of a firmware fix.
Cheers,
Joel

Re: iPhone 3G car accessories
I not convinced by the whole firewire charging support issue. I tried using the iPhone USB cable with 2 different USB power charger adapters for the car and it didn't work with either.
My Alpine head unit doesn't charge it but the iPhone says that it is not a supported accessory. It still plays through the head unit but doesn't charger. I don't put it in flight mode as I want to receive calls. Don't really get an interference problem, at least no more than with any mobile phone in the car.

Re: iPhone 3G car accessories
What cases do you recommend for an iPhone 3G? I need one that will
allow the iPhone to easily slip in to my pocket, preferably still
allow the design of the phone to be seen (i.e., possible a clear
case), and provide at least some protection should it be dropped. It
would be good if it was also easy to sync while in the case.

You don't have to be convinced. Previous iPhones and iPods supported
charging on BOTH the USB (low power) and Firewire (high power) pins.
Most devices used the firewire because it was compatible with older
hardware, it charged faster, and they didn't have to change anything.
If your device uses the firewire power to charge, the new iPhone
cannot charge off it because it has not connector on that pin.

They are most likely using hte firewire power pin then.
(the firewire power pin does not mean it is a firewire connector, it's
just which pin they routed the power too)

The Agent 18 one is nice.

When it hits the ground, it breaks apart (gracefully, you can put it
back together) absorbing at least some of the shock.

Re: iPhone 3G car accessories
I've started to see car chargers that will work with an iPhone 3G. The
Griffin Power Jot ($20 at the Apple store) has an auto adapter plug
with a USB connector and a separate iPod to USB cable. A ring around
the USB post changes color to let you know the state of charge.
At other stores I also saw a DLO charger($24) marked as working for
the iPhone 3G and a Kensington plug with a USB port ($10) that looks
like it should work with an iPod cable,

I have one of these, and bought one for my daughter. It works as
advertised. It's "Power Jolt" though -- tiny typo.

Re: iPhone 3G car accessories
For those who have original iPhone docks, they can be made to work with the new 3G. I simply used a Dremel rotary grinder hand tool to grind out a small portion of the plastic at the front portion of the dock. The new 3G now fits snugly into my existing apple iphone/blueooth headset dock.

Re: iPhone 3G car accessories
Re: Existing iPod/iPhone car accessories.
Several years ago, APPLE issued an engineering memo that stated that Firewire was being dropped. In order to give manufacturers time to retool both interfaces through the Apple adapter had been supported. Note that the FIREWIRE power is 12VDC which is the same as almost every car made today. Taking the cheapest route and ignoring Apple recommendation, the car makers choose to implement the FIREWIRE 12VDC because it saved them the extra $3 12 VDC to 5 VDC regulator. This is not Apple's fault, but the fault of the auto manufacturers without exception.
But the blame where it belongs - on the manufacturer.
On the other hand - this could have been avoided if Apple had included more information about the difference in the 3G and the first gen iphone.
I would assume (I hate that word) the future versions of the iPod will have the same issue.

Re: iPhone 3G car accessories
Yeah I know what you mean. I had the same problems with my touch 2g.. I found some real cheap deals though after looking around online. Worked out real good from this one site. They have a cheap charger for the iPhone 3g also I saw. Lots of good reviews to if you google. http://www.inspiretech.com/p-345-iphone-3g-car-charger.aspx hope links are cool.

Re: iPhone 3G car accessories
Another source for inexpensive iPhone accessories is
dealextreme.com
I have bought several power adapters, external batteries spare
earbuds to keep in the car, etc. The quality is generally pretty
good, shipping is free (but takes a while because it comes direct
from Hong Kong or Taiwan.

Re: iPhone 3G car accessories
It is interesting to learn about the Firewire issue. I did note that quite a few charging accessories didn't initially work with the iPhone 3G. I have managed to buy a (working) car charger from these guys:
Don't always assume that an accessory will work with the iPhone 3G - I've found you need to use a reputable website to check compatibility information.
