Issues with Office 2004 SP1

[Engst, Adam]Adam Engst - 01:27pm Oct 19, 2004 PST

As I noted to Steve privately, I haven't seen a problem here, but I
don't work with tables much over a page in size often, and I wasn't
specifically looking.

I work a lot with tables. The first thing I noticed after installing
the update was a significant decrease in performance in simple tasks,
like cut and paste in large tables. They are excruciatingly slow and
I sit around for several seconds waiting for the operation to
complete. Have you noticed any similar degradation in performance?

Steve

Re: Issues with Office 2004 SP1

Using AutoUpdate is not that straightforward if you have a machine with less than 256 MB RAM, like my PowerBook G3. While my desktop G4 smoothly updated AutoUpdate and then installed the Service Pack, the AutoUpdate on my PowerBook kept saying that there were no updates available. I downloaded the updater for AutoUpdate manually from Microsoft's download pages, but it refused to install because my machine has less than 256 MB RAM (it has 128 MB). So I ended up downloading the Service Pack manually as well, and this updated without any problems. I then tried to figure out the system requirements for Office 2004 in general, but these are nowhere to be found on Microsoft's webpages. Office 2004 itself runs without too many problems (albeit quite slowly) on my 400 MHz PowerBook G3, why should an updater require more RAM than the application itself?

Adam,

I enjoy reading the articles, forums, etc. on tidbits.com. Thanks for
providing such a valuable resource.

You had noted the improvements in SP1, but there is one that was
overlooked. One of the major improvements was to fix the Copy/Cut/Paste,
etc. bug in VBA. What a frustration it was to not have the Copy (etc.)
ability fully functional in VBA. SP1 corrected that situation. For those
of us who use Excel 2004, this was very much needed, and that itself was
worth the 22 MB download of the update over a dialup ISP.

Now, if only MS would actually provide a "real" VBA counterpart to the
Windows side (it's like comparing a bicycle to a Harley - both provide
transportation, but...), there would be far better cross-platform
integration.

Thanks again.

Rich

Re: Issues with Office 2004 SP1

A minor bug I've noticed since downloading and installing SP1 is that
every time I quit Excel, I get the message "Compile error in hidden
module: AutoExec." The application itself appears to be functioning
properly.

This was covered in MacFixIt. Basically the answer is, it's not an error;
you should believe this message and try to find the hidden module. It is
probably PDFMaker.xla (in your Office Startup folder). m.
