What is my name or number for the person who receives the text? In
other words, when they get an incoming text and look at their phone,
what do they see- my screenname? phone number?

The recipient actually sees a number as the originator- in my case
it's "265-060" but I don't know if that's specific to my AIM account
of just AIM in general. But the text that comes in includes "[your AIM
email address]: (using AOL IM)", then the message, then "(You can
reply to this message)".

Re: Send SMS for Free via AIM on iPhone

I have tried this and what I am finding is happening is that when I get a reply, it is hitting both my AIM and SMS applications. So my real quesion is, am I getting charged for the ones that hit sms (I am assuming yes) - I would check except AT&T wireless site errors out everytime I try and check my Data usage. If I do get hit for the cost, is there some way of avoiding it hit the SMS application when I get replies?

Good article...

One drawback to the method you described is that it appears that if somebody replies to you, you have to be in the AIM program to receive the reply. If you leave it, you are signed off and are not notified. Any work-around for that?

Since I can send sms messages from my Yahoo! mail (the +12065550551 format)  is it possible to do this same thing with say Pidgin and yahoo! accounts?

Re: Send SMS for Free via AIM on iPhone

If the other person as you say pays to send the text I assume they pay
to receive it also. I would assume if they have an unlimited text
plan, they would incur no other charges am I right?

Re: Send SMS for Free via AIM on iPhone

Hey Jeff,
I don't know if i'm missing a step or what, but I followed the instructions to the letter twice and both times i got "Unable to send IM +1234567899 is unable to receive offline messages" Obviously 1234567899 is a fake number but you get the point. Does the person that i'm sending the message to need to do something? Please let me know because I always like to save a few bucks since gas is so damn expensive.

Most cell phone companies allow people to block SMS messages not sent
from cell phones (in order to block spam). David Pogue blogged on it
last month:

Very cool! Is there a way to change the mobile number to a name once
it is set up?
