GyazMail brpearce (apparently) - 12:39pm Jun 11, 2008 PSTvia emailI've asked questions about using Mail and GMail's IMAP accounts here from time to time -- I've tried everything I could think of (I even tried forwarding the messages from my half-dozen business accounts into a new address, and using rules to handle them!), but I haven't been able to avoid the problems I've had with Mail not downloading new messages. (I find I had to quit and restart the program to nudge it a bit -- but even then, I found I'd have problems with accounts that had mail downloaded by my iPhone first.)
I discovered GyazMail over the weekend (almost by accident, in fact), and I've become very happy with it. It took some tinkering to get the configuration right, but once I had that all sorted out, it just -- works. Mail comes in from all of the IMAP accounts, all of them, and I never have to wonder and worry about it.
I really miss Smart Folders (and I hope they'll be added soon), and the way deleting messages in Mail caused them to be Archived in GMail, instead of deleted (does anyone know if there's a way to mimic that behavior with GyazMail?), and I'm not overly fond of the icons in the toolbar -- but those are sacrifices I'm willing to make, for now, to avoid the irritation I've had in dealing with Mail and IMAP.
Anyone else using GyazMail?

Re: GyazMail
I went over to the GyazMail website after reading your message. The main page just had a list of features, many of which I was unable to appreciate the significance of.
I see that you have a specific issue with Mail that has prompted you to try out an alternative. Now that you've tried the software, are there any reasons that people not experiencing this issue might want to try it out?
Sorry this isn't an answer to your question, but I'm get some basic background on GyazMail.

Re: GyazMail
I had a look around for reviews after I found the GyazMail site, and found one at MacWorld: < http://www.macworld.com/article/132663/2008/04/gyazmail15.html>.
To be honest, I've only been using the program about a week, and the differences between Mail and GyazMail seem to be mostly minor -- the most compelling one I've found is that GyazMail actually works reliably for me in this situation where Mail didn't!
I do like the way GyazMail allows me to essentially hide certain IMAP folders, though (so I'm not seeing the same unread message in my Inbox *and* All Mail, for example. and it isn't throwing off the new mail count that the icon displays). And I like the ability to assign specific notifications to different accounts (though I'd imagine there's a way to do that in Mail, as well). But I still miss Smart Mailboxes.
I'll gladly pay the $18 US for GyazMail -- I consider that a small price to pay for peace of mind -- but given a choice, I'd probably go back to using Mail if it was only more reliable in this set of circumstances.

Re: GyazMail
I'm a Eudora refugee who ended up with Gyazmail.
What's to like: Excellent filters. You can assign keystrokes to individual filters and then run them on selected messages- use it for filing mail to common mailboxes that don't have a specific sender associated with them. You can also use this to add labels to messages. There is also a keystroke to run all filters on selected messages. Stable Friendly developer IMAP works very well Local accounts- you can use these to view the mail you've backed up from another computer running Gyazmail (I can keep a backup of our family email there and view it/search it)
The bad Search is a pain across mailboxes- clicking a folder doesn't select the mailboxes inside it for search HTML is displayed fine, but can't style text when writing- just occasionally it would be nice (e.g. for numbered/bulleted lists) Both of these are on Goichi's to-do list, but no ETA.
Cheers,
Craig

Re: GyazMail
I've been using it for some time now. I went looking for alternatives because of problems with Mail, but will stick with GyazMail even if Mail does become more stable.
I like its nice clean layout, and it's faster and much more stable than Mail. The developer is also very responsive. (He even answers individual emails.)
I don't use smart folders, so don't miss them. I do want encryption, a feature that is promised for down the road. But even without that, it's still my default email client. You don't very often get something this good for only $18 these days.

Where do you see the instability of Mail? In crashes? Mine never crashes.

On a mail server mailing list I'm on there are definite clusters of Mail.app works perfectly and Mail.app works terribly if at all. There's something there but just what it is is not fully clear. There ARE issues that seem to come and go with version upgrades that have to do with IMAP support. But again, these are hard to pin down.
Oh, well.

Re: GyazMail
The major reason I find to use GyazMail is that it has OUTGOING rules.
