Are Time Capsule backups encrypted during transmission?

Haven't been able to find the answer to this question: if you use Time Machine to back up wirelessly to a Time Capsule or USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme, are the transmissions encrypted? Or does it depend on whether you've secured your wireless network generally?

I prefer to run my Airport network open (yes, I know the security issues), but would like to use Time Machine to backup wirelessly to a USB drive hanging off my Airport Extreme. I'll only do it, however, if the backup travels over the airwaves in an encrypted manner.

Also, anyone have experience with multiple Time Machine backups? I'd like to have one USB drive at work and another at home, with Time Machine backing up to both -- never can tell when there might be a fire!
