Good time or dumb time to buy an iPod Touch

[Gerlits, Dave]Dave Gerlits - 01:31am May 17, 2008 PST

We live near Boston, and my lovely wife wants us to visit the new flagship store and treat me to an iPod. We may go as early as Sunday.

I have a Palm T|X, and want to replace it with an iPod touch. I'm aware of the iPhone/iPod Touch drawbacks as far as no support for tasks, but I wanted to hear if this is not a good time to buy a Touch.

I've been reading about the next generation of iPhones emerging in June, plus updates to the operating system. Would it be better to wait until mid or late June to buy an iPod Touch, after the pending changes emerge?

Thanks!

Dave Gerlits

The first touch came out months after the iPhone, so I suspect any
modification to the touch would take several months at a minimum.

If you find out an answer to this question elsewhere please post it
here . . . I'm in the same boat as you. My Palm is on it's last legs
(the on/off switch is going) and it will be replaced by a Touch . . .
but a new model would be nice:-)

Unless your wife's offer to treat you to an iPod comes with a near-term expiration date, I'd wait until after Steve Job's keynote address at Apple's worldwide developer conference that starts on June 9th. At that point we should know what upgrades or new products are coming and when. I'm porting 2 of my company's applications to run on an iPhone but we're waiting to see what the new hardware is going to look like before buying any hardware.

No one knows if there are hardware changes on the way for the Touch for
June -- it isn't an unreasonable guess, but it could go either way --
but Touches shipping by late June should include the 2.0 OS on them,
while ones bought before then will have to pay to get the upgrade.

The last upgrade for the Touch ended up being $20. This one is supposed
to have more changes, but the price hasn't been announced yet -- it
could be the same, more, or less. But it definitely sounds worthwhile.

At this point, I'd give it another month, if you can wait a bit longer.

Ues, if for no other reason than the 2.0 software is not free for the
iTouch as it is for the iPhone. There's a for sure $20 saving.

More likely they didn't want to dilute the hype of either by having them compete for attention.

On the one hand, the iPod Touch doesn't have all the features of the
Palm, but on the other hand IT'S SO COOL!

I too have a Palm T|X that I've simply stopped using. I've had to keep
rebooting it, and the screen touchpad is so far off that I can't set
it. Plus, the syncing no longer is reliable. Heck, it won't even sync
to my PC at work.

I've too ogled at the iPod Touch as a possible replacement. However, I
am waiting for the June release of the official SDK. This will give me
an idea of what type of third party software will be available for the
Touch (which will probably replace many of the third party programs I
had for my Palm). Plus, Apple won't charge me $20 for updating my iPod
Touch to upgrade my iPod Touch in order to download these third party
programs.

My suggestion is to wait a few weeks and see what Apple announces at
their WWDC. I suspect that Apple will announce several major
improvements in the interface and about 100 downloadable programs for
both the iPod Touch and the iPhone.

Patience my good man. Besides, it'll give you more time to go back to
the Apple store and play around with everything as you take the time
to "make up your mind". Rumors suggest that there might be not only a
major upgrade for the iPhone, but that Apple might start selling the
iPhone unlocked. We'll find out June 9th!

Re: Good time or dumb time to buy an iPod Touch

Well, I went through this process a couple of months ago when my palm TX outright died on me with no warning. Fortunately the updated software had come out for the touch which i got. I love it. The calendar on it is even better than the one on the palm and it generally syncs well and reliably with iCal. A few minor misses. All the other stuff is pretty cool too. I am imagining lots of new software soon but I am very glad to have it now. And if I was in your situation now, I would probably try to wait a few more weeks. Then again new software can have bugs too...
