Does Carbon Copy Cloner do a Smart Update when cloning?
via email
I just backed up my main OS using CCC 3.0.1. After doing so, I
ran CCC again after I had made some changes to the main volume's
software. I selected "Copy selected items" and the info I
got was:
The selected items from "MacBook 10.4.10 Boot" will
be copied onto "Boot CCClone". Items on "Boot CCClone"
will not be overwritten if they are newer than items at the same path
on "MacBook 10.4.10 Boot". Any items that exist on
"Boot CCClone" that do not exist at the same path on
"MacBook 10.4.10 Boot" will be left untouched.
I assumed that even though all source items were checked, only
those clone items that were older than that item on the source would
be overwritten. Not so! When I ran CCC, I got an error message that the
process had stopped as there wasn't enough room on the cloned drive! I
checked and found CCC generated a complete new copy of my boot
volume onto the clone drive and did not have room for two
copies!
CCC just seemed to generate a copy of every item in the source
regardless of its age. Hence, it ran out of room. Note, those items
that were changed in the source since the previous clone amounted to
about 25 MB and there was about 90 GB of free space on the clone
drive. The source was about 107 GB.
Shouldn't CCC behave like SuperDuper!'s Smart Update? Am I doing
something wrong? Any ideas what the problem is?
Thanks,
Tom Casselman
