MacOS 10.3.5 -- error when trying to play a DVD

[PGorny]PGorny - 10:16am Sep 30, 2004 PST

After several years of problem-free use of DVDs now an error message appears when I try to open a DVD on my G4 PowerBook (Mac OS X 10.3.5).

In German the message reads:
>Ein Initialisierungsfehler ist aufgetreten - Der Video-Treiber hat nicht genügend Video-Speicher, um das Medium abzuspielen. [-70026]<<

My translation to English:
>An initialization error occurred - The video driver cannot play the medium due to insufficient video storage space. [-70026]<<

Until now nobody could make sense of this message (especially because of the notion of "drivers" in a unix environment).

Any explanation?

[My guess would be low disk space for virtual memory (try rebooting). -Adam]

Peter

I'm guessing you (Peter) have your PowerBook display set to Millions
of colors, and perhaps you have an external monitor attached, right? Just
set it to Thousands of colors and all will be well. The same is true of
Chess.app, by the way; it starts up blank (i.e. black) if you have not
enough video memory because you're using too many colors and too many
monitors. m.

Thanks Matt -- You hit the point: I HAD set the G4-monitor to milions of colors and a 19" monitor to thousands!! It was sufficient to change the number of colors and I could play the DVDs again....

Re: MacOS 10.3.5 -- error when trying to play a DVD

Using my iMac G4, OS 10.4.3, I get an initialization error -5000 when trying to play a DVD. I tried changing from millions of colors to thousands and it didn't help. What's up? The DVD plays on my G4 laptop, with millions of colors!
