Changes in Office 2008

Since Word's Fast Save feature is legendary for causing corrupt
documents, I've long disabled it on any new installation.

After installing Office 2008, I just now visited Word's preferences
and can't find the "Enable Fast Save" check box. Are we to assume
that Word no longer does its "eat documents via Fast Save" behavior,
or that Fast Save is now permanently enabled? Moreover, is the change due to the new file format, and if so is the behavior if you choose the *old* format as your default?

I believe Fast Save is permanently DISabled. With modern hard drives, normal
save is fast enough, and removing the feature eliminates both document
corruption and the privacy issues (where a text editor could recover deleted
material from a fast-saved document).
