Mac OS X 10.5.2 Update: Dock Stacks Go Bye-bye

[Weintraub, David]David Weintraub (apparently) - 04:55am Feb 15, 2008 PST

There is a big change between the "old" Steve Jobs from the 1980s and
the "new" Steve Jobs of Apple, Inc.: The "new" Steve Jobs does listen.
I just updated to Mac OS X 5.2, and the Doc stacks issue has been
thoroughly fixed. There are now two separate options in the new
update.

Option #1 is how you want to display the folder/stack. Do you want to
display it as a stack of documents, or do you want to display it as
the containing folder. Since I have the Stack Overlays Drawer icons
from http://www.geocities.jp/chy065/, I've decided to keep them
displayed as stacks.

Option #2 is how you want to display the folder/stack when you click
on it. You still have the Fan and Grid view, but now you also have the
list view. The list view is just as it is in Tiger. You can drag your
hard drive into the Dock and navigate through your whole hard drive.

Oh, Apple also adjusted the transparency of the menu bar down, and you
can even turn it off.

It's nice to know that Apple does listen on occasions.

Oh, one more nice feature: Time machine now has a menu bar icon which
can show you when the backup failed or when it is backing up.

I think that on balance, Apple gets it right more often than not.
There are notable exceptions, of course. The transparent menubar, for
me, was one such case. I despised it mere seconds after install
Leopard and am glad to see it gone without hacks.

But I think often what the Developers think about the UI adn the
'glitz' of OS X is flat out wrong. They want NeXT Step 10, and the
users do not.

I am often on the Developers side of this tug-of-war, but I
acknowledge I am wrong :/

How does one choose the options? My look at Preferences/Dock didn't show anything suggestive. Also my Finder/Preferences didn't either. So where look? Thanks.

Each folder has its own options in its contextual menu, the one that
appears when you press down on the folder in the dock.

You won't find it in Preferences since each folder in the Dock can
have different settings. Control-click (or right click) on the folder
in the Dock and you will see the options. If the folder is set to View
Contents as List then when you click on that folder you will also see
an Options sub-menu.

Right-click (or Control-click) on a folder's icon in the Dock; instead of a
stack for the folder, you'll see the options for displaying that stack.

Right click the item in the dock you want to change. It is not a dock
preference, it is an item specific preference.

How do you get one of the stack folders back to the dock again if
you've completely removed them? I don't see anywhere to do that from.

Howard

I may be all wet on this but for most of 2007 Apple internal R&D seemed to be stretched to the limit. I'm betting that UI changes that were desired but not required to ship got deferred till update time. I've been there before on other platforms.

I removed the download folder from a friend's dock, thinking it would be easy to replace, but we couldn't figure out how to do that.

AFAIK, drill down to the folder and click & drag it into the Dock.

Could someone who still has these folders try and see if you right
click on them, is the option "Show in Finder" there? If see, we could
find out where the original of the folder is and drag it back to the
dock. Just a shot in the dark.

Howard

Now if we can just have an option to change the 3D-dock to the great looking new 2D dock without having to use the command line...

In Leopard, the Downloads folder is now an "official" folder inside each
user's Home folder.

It should be in your home directory, alongside Documents and Pictures and
whatnot.

Indeed.

Unless it got moved, the Downloads folder for Leopard is just in your
home folder, along with Desktop, Documents, Library, Music, Movies,
Pictures, Sites, etc.

Just like any folder, you should be able to drag it off if you don't
like it, or drag it back if you want it back. That seems to be exactly
what happens on my laptop here when I removed & re-added it.

Aside from the "magic" new ways that you can view the contents of the
folder, the basic behavior for adding folders to & removing folders from
the dock isn't significantly different under 10.5.x than it was under
previous versions of OSX.

Thanks! There have been several replies about this, but actually I
should have better expressed myself from the start. The folders I'm
really having trouble finding are the ones for Recent Documents and
Applications. I nuked those from the dock and now I wonder how to get
them back?

Thanks to all!

Howard, you may want to search MacOSXHints for "Recent Things". There was a posting there about that.
