Citrix on the Mac in a PC network

[norm.bzr]norm.bzr - 05:01am Feb 8, 2008 PST

Just wondering if anyone has experience in using Citrix on the Mac in a PC [Windows] network environment - my question is: is it a simple matter to move / copy files between the host [Windows] network and the Mac ?? When I have mentioned this to our IT people they seemed rather unsure - that the only [ ?? ] benefit of using Citrix for them was to access the Windows system, and of course they wondered why anyone would want to work in another environment anyway [I have given up trying to answer that one !!].

thanks Norm Beazer

I transfer files like that every day and have no problems at all. You
just have to allow the Citrix client to read and write to your disk
(once pr. logon) and then it has access to your home folder.

Best,

The short answer is yes but it depends. There is a configuration
option in Citrix, and RDP for that matter, that will allow you to map
you local (Mac) drives into your Citrix session. If it's active when
you login to your Citrix Session it will ask you if you want to mount
your local drives as read/write, read only or not to mount at all.
Then you can just copy them in the Citrix environment to you hearts
content. If your IT department does not have the feature active the
best way I have found is to just mail them to yourself. It is possible
to use other methods but it entirely depends on how locked down your
Citrix session is.

How do you copy the files without losing the Resource Forks, when in Citrix and writing to a PC file server?

Re: Citrix on the Mac in a PC network

I don’t know the technical answer to that question - but it cannot be any kind of issue, for those of us already using the modern version of “sneaker net” [a USB flash drive]. I routinely move files between PC and Mac this way, but it gets to be a minor pain [at the PC end, the small hassle of disconnecting the flash drive]. And many files just open without fuss [eg: MS Word, Excel, .rtf].

I am still waiting on our IT people to say “yes” and then help me get onboard [being a first for them, they are pondering the “security” issues or something ?? ] - so I have also got my name down for the new iTornado [see below] when it arrives next month which might make life even easier, at least for moving or copying files. Citrix of course would allow me to fake “run windows” on my Mac - but that is not actually what I want. I want to use my Mac OS, with directory access to the Windows files.

I will post again when I have made some progress

I believe you'd have to zip the files up before copying them up to that
server, then unzip after retrieving to a Mac
