Shutting down on UPS power

[Anbinder, Mark H.]Mark H. Anbinder (apparently) - 06:54am Feb 6, 2008 PST

I'm working with a colleague's computer, and we're wondering what
happens under the UPS settings in Energy Saver when the computer is
running on UPS power and decides it needs to shut down.

What does the computer do if an application warns that a document
needs to be saved? What does it do if Safari warns that you've got
multiple tabs open? Does the Mac sit forlornly on these modal alert
windows, waiting for a user to intervene... until the UPS runs out of
juice and the computer is suddenly dead? Or is there a mechanism for
shutting down gracefully before power runs out, despite these alerts?

Best thing to do is try it.

I believe /usr/libexec/upsshutdown gets executed which then does a
shell shutdown command--i.e. GUI apps are force-quit.

See the man page for upsshutdown too.

I there anyway to get an auto restart after the system shuts down cleanly? I know that you set a server to restart after a crash/powerfail, but what about this case?

Nothing apparent in the manual.

I assume you mean after a UPS shutdown from the thread title?

In which case have you tried System Prefs -> Energy Saver, Settings
for UPS -> Options -> 'Restart automatically after a power failure'?

According to what I have read, that will not work, because their was no power failure as far as the system was concerned. That supposedly only works if the power fails at the server, not if it detects one coming and does an orderly shutdown.

For all of the APC UPS's I've ever used, that doesn't work. Either the
power failure isn't long enough for the UPS to turn off the power
receptacles, and the computer never knows the power failed, or the UPS
turns off power to the receptacles and doesn't turn it back on again
when the power is restored. Every single APC UPS I've ever had needed
to be switched off and on before power was turned back on to the
receptacles.

And none of mine have needed that. (I'm currently running my third
and fourth APC--an old BackUPS Pro 1100 and a new BackUPS RS 1500 LCD
(I used the "Trade UPS") program from a BackUPS Pro 1000 whose battery
wore out).

The 1000 and the 1100, as I found out the hard way, can't be turned
off to save battery and turned on before power to the mains is
restored. (I carried the 1000 down to a nearby cafe where I'm well
known, and plugged it in to get the receptacles turned back on.)

The difference could be that I've never connected the monitoring
stuff. Or it could be different models.
