Quick Fix for a Mac Typing in the Wrong Language

I've been switching between input methods (English and Japanese) since
System 7.1 or thereabouts. Cmd-Space has been the keyboard shortcut for
switching between input methods for at least that long. So Spotlight is
interfering with switching between input methods, not the other way
round.
On Japanese systems, the default keyboard shortcut for Spotlight is
Ctrl-Space. I use Ctrl-Esc for LaunchBar. The Japanese keyboard layout
switches the Ctrl and Caps Lock keys, among other minor changes. I
couldn't begin to speculate on why Apple didn't separate these defaults
on US systems.

Re: Quick Fix for a Mac Typing in the Wrong Language

Hi Tonya,

Yes, it's odd why Apple would use the same shortcut for both. I've
used Command-Space for switching between English and Japanese input
for years, and when I moved up to Tiger, I disabled the Spotlight
shortcut.

As you say, LaunchBar is the bees knees for app launching. I use
Command-Esc for that. My son uses Option-Esc because Command-Esc
launches Front Row on his Leopard-powered iMac. Very confusing.

Re: Quick Fix for a Mac Typing in the Wrong Language

I was interested in your problem of conflicting shortcuts - I have been using the "haxie" Menu Master by Unsanity for quite some time, to modify pretty much any menu shortcut, including some of those you mention [eg: those for Spotlight]. I have no idea whether my favourite haxie would have been any help to you at all in the situation you describe [probably not] but I find that there are very few menu shortcuts that cannot be altered - on the fly, including most system shortcuts. I just never use the menu shortcut procedures commonly supplied with many programs - they are just too slow and tedious for me. MM seems to resolve the potential conflicts quite well - just "deletes" [not actually] the conflicting call. Problem solved. And reverting to standard / default is simple enough.

For me - the big attraction is being able to modify things as and when one needs, right there in the Menu itself - according to the whim of the moment. Really adds to productivity in my opinion. Hope that is not getting too far from discussing your actual problem.
