Can I stop the start up chime in 10.4.11?

[salidacreative]salidacreative - 10:21pm Jan 25, 2008 PST

In earlier versions of 10.4 managing the start up chime was different. If I didn't want the start up chime or just wanted it at a low volume, the last volume setting on the computer was used. After one update of iTunes, a usb headset wouldn't be recognized until I went to system preferences and selected it. In 10.4.10, everything, related to audio, was perfect, finally, headset recognized at start up and the chime played through it.

Enough about the old versions. What has happened since updating to 10.4.11 is this: headset recognized, but start up chime is played at full volume through the computer's speakers no matter what. I tried lowering system volume all the way and muting and having a headset plugged in and the chime continues to play at full volume through the speakers. This has to stop. I need quiet restarts.

Sometimes I do not restart for long periods, but when I do restart it is disconcerting to have the chime played aloud when you're not expecting it and especially after muting the speakers. In libraries, coffeeshops...

I'd be willing to turn the start up chime off completely if someone knows a terminal command for it. Nothing else has worked. Oh, and yes, I tried disabling Application Enhancer. Checked Apple's site for ideas too, but found nothing useful there.

Thanks.

computer is Powerbook G4, 1.67 (powerbook 5,8)

I don't think the startup chime is a new thing. Well not with my Mac Mini and iMac anyway. I do remember being able to mute the startup chime with my 6100, but my memory is not reliable. :) But I don't think I've ever been able to manage the startup chime in any version of Mac OS X. But it may very well be computer dependent. Michael

Not an elegant idea, but I believe this will do the trick:

Go to Radio Shack (or wherever you buy your electronic doodads) and
pick up something like a 1/8" stereo to mono headphone adaptor plug.
Plug it into your headphone port. Plug nothing into the adaptor.
Simple, cheap, easily reversible, and involves no software hacking.

Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy. All you have to do is mute the sound before
you shut down. Ah, you say, what if I forget to do that? Well, just
tell your Mac to do it for you. How to do so is explained simply here:

I do it by sticking an old headphone jack from a broken headset into
the headset port.

No sound.

No Terminal.

Completely under your control.

No fuss. no muss, no problem.

If the machine is muted before it turns off, the chime shouldn't play
when it gets turned back on.

If it's off, and you want it on, you should be able to reset it by
resetting the PRAM (hold [cmd]+[option]+[p]+[r] at start), which is
nearly the only thing that a PRAM (nee NVRAM) reset fixes these days.

TinkerTool System should work for this. Check their site for the
version for 10.4.11.

I am using 10.4.11 and have no trouble with the startup chime on any of 4 different Macs. I use a freeware program from

<http://www5e.biglobe.ne.jp/~arcana/index.en.html>

called StartupSound.prefPane and it works well. No chimes or anything but sweet silence on startup.

Note that Intel systems are different than PPC systems. I filed a bug
report with Apple about the startup chime on a Mac Pro, and was told
it's as intended. I think it's just a characteristic of the PC BIOS
lineage that Apple doesn't care enough about to change.

Macs don't use BIOS, they use EFI.

Which is why I didn't say they use BIOS. They do, however, have a BIOS
lineage, which is updated in EFI. Intel designed EFI as the successor to
BIOS, and thus logically it's conceptually closer to BIOS than to Open
Firmware. If Apple had designed EFI from scratch, rather than picking up
Intel's existing work, I imagine the boot audio behavior would more
closely match PPC Mac convention.

Re: Can I stop the start up chime in 10.4.11?

This problem is still here in 10.5, and not only that, but it is inconsistent: for a while, I set the sound down to nothing at shutdown, and that meant the startup chime was silent. Then, BOOM, something changed and nothing I do will stop it from sounding a full-max chime at startup. Headphones plugged in: nope. Set sound to zero ahead of time: nope. Set sound to Mute ahead of time: nope.

I will do some experiments later, but I wonder if it could be connected with the fact that we watch DVD's every evening, and for that I have to turn volume up to max? Perhaps it takes the startup chime volume from the last state of the DVD player?

Either way, this is not a feature, this a bug.

You can use:

Startup Chime Stopper ($19)
http://alphaomega.software.free.fr/startupchimestopper/Startup%20Chime
%20Stopper.html

StartupSound.prefPane (beta)
http://www5e.biglobe.ne.jp/~arcana/StartupSound/index.en.html
