New to OS X but having internet connectivity problems

[strobelight]strobelight - 07:26am Jan 23, 2008 PST

I now have Tiger on my G4 400Mhz but am unable to get on the internet. The problem is probably due to the fact that I have to use a PCI ethernet card. I managed to get the green ball to show on "en1" interface. When I boot OS 9 again, it works and uses the "Slot-D" interface. I've uncheck the "en0" interface since I know it's unusable (it's the onboard ethernet which got zapped by lightning static).

I have DSL and a router which logs on for me. Other PCs on my home net have no problem using the internet. The router assigns an IP to each. The IP I get is 192.168.0.2 and the router IP is 192.168.0.1. I cannot even ping the router. Instead I get "no route to host" or similar message. I've configured manually with the IP 192.168.0.2, mask 255.255.255.0 and router IP of 192.168.0.1.

I would feel like I'm getting close if only I could ping the router, but can't even get that far.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Ken

The problem is likely that your PCI Ethernet card requires specific drivers for Mac OS X. When I had this happen to my dual 1 GHz Power Mac G4, I specifically bought an Intel Pro/100 Ethernet card because it would work in Mac OS X without drivers. It was fine in Tiger, and works fine in Leopard too. See the full article at:

Then why would the network status ball be "green"? To me, that would imply that the operating system sees the card and can perform some communication to it via drivers already in place.

I'm still looking into this problem, and ran "netstat -rn" and see that for some reason, 192.168.0.2 is routed locally instead of to the router, 192.168.0.1. 192.168.0.2 is the IP the router assigned to me.

Re: New to OS X but having internet connectivity problems

Here's my netstat -rn (hope I typed in the relevant portions correctly):

default 192.168.0.1 UGSc en1

127 127.0.0.1 UCS lo0

127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1 UH lo0

169.254 link#5 UCS en1

192.168.0 link#5 UC en1

192.168.0.1 link#5 UHRLW en1

192.168.0.2 127.0.0.1 UHS lo0

On a similar note, it seems my Ethernet port died on my MacBook. Before I go out and buy an Ethernet to USB adaptor, are there any diagnostic apps that I could run to narrow down the problem? I'm coming up empty.

Thanks!

Boot to another hard drive (e.g. Firewire target mode if you have
another Intel Mac, or any Mac running Leopard); if it still doesn't
work, it's a hardware problem, not software, and needs a repair.

That's correct. The routes show where data is directed when you send
TO an address. Since your machine is 192.168.0.2, data for that
address is routed to the local interface, so that it "loops back"
right away to your machine.

I don't see anything wrong with your full routing, either. Someone
else may.

Re: New to OS X but having internet connectivity problems

did you download the driver? OS X may recognize the device, but may not be able to communicate with it, other than reporting that it exists (green icon). If it does NOT work, even after the driver is installed, there are plenty of (under $20) cards that will communicate with your G4. If those don't work, you may have hardware issues that aren't easily resolved.

The hardware tests in Micromat's TechTool Pro may be able to help you
find the culprit.

Re: New to OS X but having internet connectivity problems

I would think the route should be 192.168.0.2 talks to 192.168.0.1 (the router).

Adams suggestion to buy an Intel PCI card worked, go figure.
