Clipboard History Applications

[LKM]LKM - 08:38am Sep 16, 2004 PST

I would like to ad that there are several other "Clipboard History" applications. In fact, the excellent (and currently free) application launcher Quicksilver includes one, too.

<http://quicksilver.blacktree.com/>

Actually, calling Quicksilver an application launcher doesn't do it justice. In addition to launching applications and providing a Clipboard History, it does a ton of other stuff, among them:

- Open Documents - Open URLs - Start Web searches - Provide a "Shelf" - Reveal, Copy, Delete and do other things to files

43 Folders has a series of blog entries about what you can do with Quicksilver, starting here: <http://merlin.blogs.com/43folders/2004/09/quicksilver_gra.html>

In short, I encourage everyone to check out Quicksilver. It will change the way you use your Mac.

I find it hard to believe that any "power" user could possibly get by without multiple clipboards. This has become so integrated into my workflow I just can't remember how anyone can work without it.

Apart from the simple copy and pasting and the email cleanup mentioned in the post though, I'd like to point out one of its features which is invaluable to me.

I'm obliged to use Internet Explorer under Windows XP Pro via Virtual PC 6 to edit a website whose content I look after. I spend a lot of time copying and pasting between Windows and the Mac. My Mac targets are Tex-Edit Plus where AppleScripts clean up HTML coding, Omni Outliner where I do some record keeping, Eudora where I send confirmations and receive material for posting to the site and Safari where I add posts to a blog-style RSS feed. [Most of these things happen while I wait for the unbelievably slow Microsoft Content Management Server to do its thing.]

Something in the process of copying from Windows adds a mysterious control character which is ignored by most applications but which totally throws TE+ and can disrupt my web posts via Safari. My bug report to the developer has not yet brought a fix.

My process now routinely involves copying from Windows, opening the CopyPaste editor window, applying the Strip Lower ASCII conversion and then happily pasting as required.

The CopyPaste editor is also incredibly helpful for those times when you've accidentally copied too much as you can get in there and delete unwanted text.

Cheers,

Miraz

Re: Clipboard History Applications

QuickSilver represents one of the very few programs I've ever used that has completely altered the way I use my computer. I've used (and own) several other launcher/interface applications including LaunchBar which does many of the same things but not nearly as elegantly.

As an added feature to me is that the author is extremely responsive to the forum and after suggestions are hashed out in a thread, the next beta inevitably includes them.

Like Firefox and others, third party plug-ins are encouraged and there are quite a few of them. The calculator, for example, gives you a choice of OS X embedded calculators (bc which is algebraic or dc which is RPN) and three choices for display of the answer; within QS, in large type (like a phone number) or by notification via something like LanOSD.

There's also TextSoap, which does an excellent job of
cleaning up and unformatting; it also has a number of additional features,
like changing case, converting straight and smart quote marks, remove tabs,
etc. It can also batch process, which is a great convenience:

TextSoap is Applescriptable. You can also download plug-ins to use it inside
Eudora and BBEdit, and use it in MS Word, Appleworks and Entourage X via
contextual menus.

Our apologies for this slipping through. We've been hammered recently
with this kind of spam crud, and Joe must have accidentally selected
the wrong button for one of them.

cheers... -Adam
