I occasionally see something similar occurring on my system with
Path Finder which I've set up to replace Finder. While I have
found a way to fix the problem, I have not yet figured out why
it occurs in the first place and a way to prevent it from occurring.
When I get this symptom (no sound) I always get the additional
symptom. Opening the Sound Preference Panel and clicking on the
Output tab, the output volume slider is not seen. Instead there
is a message to the effect this device has no control. Also,
when this symptom occurs if I log out and log into another
account I keep pristine (no third party stuff affecting login,
no customized preferences) I find, the problem is not present.
This tells me it is something in my usual login account that is
getting corrupted somehow.
I've been able to fix this using Leopard Cache Clean to clean
the caches. I find I need to use Medium Cleaning with just the
Clean Local Cache checkbox checked. Since this works, it is
another confirmation there is a local corruption. Again, I
haven't yet been able to isolate the problem further.
