Lost Finder sounds in Leopard

[tflyness]tflyness - 07:15am Jan 15, 2008 PST

I have lost all Finder-related user interface sounds on my new 24" aluminum iMac - the sounds made by emptying the trash or copying Finder items from one location to another. They were working initially and then just stopped one day. Other alert sounds from other applications (including Mail.app) are working fine, as are other audio applications. And, weirdly, when I drag an item from a Dock Stack to the Trash directly, the Trash sound plays fine. The "play user interface sounds" box in System Preferences is checked (and when I click on the alert sounds listed in that dialog box, they play fine). These Finder interface sounds play fine for other users on the same computer, making me think that this was a User issue related to corrupted caches or preferences, but deleting all my user (and system) caches with Onyx and temporarily trashing my entire Home>Library>Preferences folder contents did NOT resolve the problem. Safe Boot does NOT resolve the problem. Have tried repairing the disk (no errors), repairing permissions (just the usual Leopard error messages), running Unix maintenance scripts with Onyx, rebooting of course, all to no avail. Audio MIDI utility appears to be configured properly. Voodoo technique of starting and quitting GarageBand did not help. Any ideas would be much appreciated! Or is this just a Leopard bug to be fixed in 10.5.2??

I occasionally see something similar occurring on my system with
Path Finder which I've set up to replace Finder. While I have
found a way to fix the problem, I have not yet figured out why
it occurs in the first place and a way to prevent it from occurring.

When I get this symptom (no sound) I always get the additional
symptom. Opening the Sound Preference Panel and clicking on the
Output tab, the output volume slider is not seen. Instead there
is a message to the effect this device has no control. Also,
when this symptom occurs if I log out and log into another
account I keep pristine (no third party stuff affecting login,
no customized preferences) I find, the problem is not present.

This tells me it is something in my usual login account that is
getting corrupted somehow.

I've been able to fix this using Leopard Cache Clean to clean
the caches. I find I need to use Medium Cleaning with just the
Clean Local Cache checkbox checked. Since this works, it is
another confirmation there is a local corruption. Again, I
haven't yet been able to isolate the problem further.

Re: Lost Finder sounds in Leopard

Thanks but unfortunately this doesn't seem to apply to my problem - I have the normal output volume slider in the Sounds preference panel. Cleaning caches with Onyx doesn't help. As I'd mentioned, other user accounts on the same mac do NOT have this sound problem, so agree it must be something in my User files, but trashing my entire Preferences folder didn't help. Any other ideas, folks?

Re: Lost Finder sounds in Leopard

Every machine onto which I have installed leopard has trashed the default sound output in the control panel with the first noticeable effect being the lack of finder sounds.  I just open the sound control panel and put it back to line-out (or whatever it was) and the sounds came back.
