Permissions repair

[Schleider, Nicky Y.]Nicky Y. Schleider - 09:01am Jan 2, 2008 PST

don't know if anybody else is having any of the problems i'm having since upgrading to leopard, but my permissions won't repair. i have a mac G5, a macmini and a macbook. at first i thought it was a problem with the G5, but i've tried with all my computers and the same thing happens. no details show up. it will show one minute remaining, even if i leave it for half an hour. i've tried everything i can think of to fix this.

anybody else have this problem? anybody know of what i can do to fix it?

he, it sounds like some permission settings are totally wrong, as if
Disk Utility is not able to read the receipt-files.

I had major problems with permissions after upgrading to 10.5.0, and
had to resort to the installer CD to half-way fix the issues and then
do the rest by hand.

I would suggest that you boot from the Leopard-CD and do the repair
from there the first time around (this is not something that I would
suggest when we get to 10.5.2 or later, but for a relatively fresh
upgrade, I think it is a good advise.)

Best,

Kim

For some folks things are completely fixed by upgrading to OS X 10.5.1.

Others still get error messages that can safely be ignored.

Re: Permissions repair

I get the same result as you. I have Macaroni installed and this does the verify and repair but in doing so issues a number of warnings that certain SUID file have been modified and will not be repaired. This is what is reported by Macaroni

I really don't know what that is all about!

Re: Permissions repair

Known problem as noted by Randy Singer and well discussed at http://discussions.apple.com/ That said, manually installing/reinstalling the 10.5.1 update and repairing permissions has eliminated most if not all those innocuous warning messages. Do note that the update hasn't addressed the stalled progress bar problem. On my G4, the permissions repair takes about 15 minutes; although, I've seen reports of up to an hour.

This might help understand your problem: "Permissions nightmare with Leopard

Re: Permissions repair

I have had the indications that the above individuals have had. When initiating repair permissions, the blue bar would start but appear to stop after about 1/2 inch showing. I thought that the machine was hung up or something and would hit "stop". I finally tried waiting and after about 12-15 minutes the permissions repaired message would come up and everything was OK. It only takes some patience for everything to happen.

I think the most recent issue with the Repair Permissions feature
should serve as a reminder that there really is no need to run Repair
Permissions unless you are troubleshooting a problem with your system.
MacJournals just had a blog entry on the subject:

I am continually astonished that despite clear documentation to the
contrary, how many people think that "Repair Permissions" repairs everything
with an entry in /Library/Receipts

For those who are still confused about what "repairing" permissions does,
how it works, and when you should do it, I humbly suggest our coverage of
the topic:
