Books for a new user niall (apparently) - 09:28am Jan 1, 2008 PSTvia emailMy daughter acquired her own Mac for Christmas (a last gen. 12"
powerbook running Leopard) and I'm looking for book recommendations.
She really is a naive user, and will be using the Mac for web
surfing, email, writing papers, and watching DVDs (she's a film
student).
I'd prefer paper book suggestions to ebooks, as I think she may be
more likely to read the paper books, but I wouldn't exclude ebooks
completely.

My daughter just purchased a MAC Book Pro/17" for her husband, who was
a longtime PC user. The greatest suggestion that I had for them,
besides why didn't you get me one while you were at it, was to go to
Amazon and purchase Mac OS X - Leopard: The Missing Manual.
I have one for Panther, which is what my wife and I are still running
and it is a terrific book to set you straight on things that use to be
obtainable from a paperback user manual from Apple.
If you can't find it there , then the IOMUG gurus are the one's that
can set you free.

I am an old-time user of Macs but when I went to Leopard I bought Mac
OS X Leopard Edition by David Pogue. I am finding it very useful.
Happy Holidays,

The Missing Manual books are fantastic, and a good place to start.
There are versions for the Mac itself (Leopard, etc, as noted by other
commenters) and also for switchers, so if she is coming from a Windows
background, that one might be worth looking at too.
The other option, of course, might be a One-to-One membership to come in
for training at a store, if that's the way she'd prefer to learn...

Most of our ebooks are aimed at a somewhat more experienced user, but
I'd recommend Robin Williams's "The Little Mac Book: Leopard
Edition." Robin does a fabulous job of helping novices.

Re: Books for a new user
There is "Take Control of Switching to a Mac" which I bought for my wife last year. I would recommend it to people that are switching over from Windows to a Mac.
