QuickTime 7.3.1 Fixes RTSP Vulnerability

[Michael.Knight]Michael.Knight (apparently) - 05:39am Dec 20, 2007 PST
via email

I'm trying to get the QT 7.3.1 Mac (Tiger) version off Apple's website.
It seems to be impossible from an XP machine. I can go directly to the
tiger link you listed
<http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime731fortiger.html>, but
clicking on the download link always takes me to
<http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/> page, which seems to know my
office machine is an XP and won't offer me any other version besides the
XP one to download.

I have only dialup at home. Typical thru-put on my phone line is around
2k per second. So a 48,700k file takes around 24,350 seconds. That's 6.7
hours. Thanks Apple. Web designers these days expect everyone to have
broadband connections to all machines.

Apple used to provide links on the download pages to take you to another
version, but those niceties seem to be missing this time. All links I
tried lead to the /quicktime/download/ page, and it just KNOWS I want
the version for the machine I'm currently on. Not.

I have got the same situation in reverse. I can download each of
the Mac OS X versions, but I can't get a copy of the Windows version to
have on my system for assisting Windows clients (ie dual
boot/virtualizastion and switcher types).

Try this:
<http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/QuickTime/061-4128.20071213.8w6nZ/QuickTimeInstaller.exe>

I really dislike web sites that try to figure out what I need and provide
me with no options to do something else. Apple used to be pretty good about
providing links to alternate versions but QuickTime really seems determined
to outsmart you.

There seems to be an honest bug on the Support pages, it seems to always go
to the OS X version.

I finally outsmarted Apple by using Firefox with an add-on that allows you
to set any User Agent you want and setting it to IE 7 for Windows/Vista.

<https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59>

Even after doing this I had to go to the direct QuickTime direct page from
scratch. Going through Support pages still tried to give me the OS X version

On your home computer, go to www.whatismyuseragent.com, copy the
useragent string for your browser/computer and email it to your work
address.

If you're not already using Firefox on the XP, download it from
www.mozilla.com and install it. Next, search for the User Agent Switcher
extension (also on mozilla's site) and install it. Quit and relaunch
Firefox. In the Tools menu, choose User Agent Switcher -> Options ...
and after highlighting User Agents click the Add button. UAS requires an
entry in the Description field (it's what will show in the Tools->UAS
menu) so just type Tiger perhaps. Then paste the whole string you
emailed to yourself into the User Agent field.

Now when you choose Tools->User Agent Switcher -> Tiger you should be
able to download Mac versions from the Apple site.

That's not the only issue. I sit here with 5 computers running, all on a
reasonably good 'net connection, 3 Macs, 1 XP, 1 Linux. (Yes I work on
all of them at once!) If I am on a website on one computer and wish to
DL software versions for more than one platform, it is far more
convenient to take them all while on that page than to have to email the
URL to myself so I can reload the page on another computer.

So for your reason, and my reason, and probably some reasons we haven't
thought of yet, I'd agree that second-guessing what a person wishes to
download based on their user agent string is very bad web design.

Re: QuickTime 7.3.1 Fixes RTSP Vulnerability

I had the problem trying to download Windows versions of QuickTime from my Mac. Solved the problem by using TinkerTool to enable the Debug menu in Safari 3.0.x. The Debug menu allows you to change the User Agent reporting for the current tab. Picked Windows MSIE 6.0 up came the Windows versions!

Not a solution for a Windows client, but useful to remember for a Mac client.

Thank you, Kazar, for your suggestion about switching user agents, which worked for me. This is the best info I've heard in months in which I also shared Michael Knight's problem. Thanks again,

it won't solve every problem when attempting to use a Mac or a non-IE
browser on some sites. A prime example is Netflix's new "Watch Now"
feature that gives Windows/IE users 17 hours of streamed movies for the
same price Mac and alternate-browser/Win users pay. (I tried to start a
thread on this but it did not make it through moderation, I guess.) The
problem is that if sites like Netflix require Active-X capability in
one's browser, only IE on Win will answer that requirement. So, one can
change one's user agent but still cannot use sites that require Active-X
(a true abomination against standards).

Nevertheless, the user-agent-switcher trick does work to gain access to
many pages and downloads from many sites. Glad it helped you.
