Leopard 10.5.1 on a G5? deemery (apparently) - 06:24am Dec 14, 2007 PSTvia email - David EmeryI installed Leopard from the install CD, and then of course SW Update
kicked in and downloaded X.5.1. Now the fans are running full-blast,
and the machine sounds like it's getting ready to launch or explode...
Anyone else had this experience?

On or about 12/14/07 6:24 AM, thus spake "David Emery" <emery grebyn.com>:

Is it doing its initial Spotlight indexing? (Use CPU sorting in Activity
Monitor to find out.) If so, just wait until it finishes... Activity Monitor
might also reveal that it's "hung up" on something. A lot depends on how you
did that initial install. If you just did an Update, something left over
from Tiger may be giving Leopard trouble. This is why Joe's book advises
using a clean form of installation. m.

The fans are definitely running more on my Quad G5. But it's just a
low hum; hardly noticeable if I turn the TV on loud enough.

I have a 2x2 G5, running 10.5.1, and it's working normally. Right now,
with nothing much running, the fans are barely ticking over. Is
anything running on your machine that might tax the CPU's and get the
fans revved up?

The most common way to disengage jet-plane mode on a PowerMac after a
version upgrade is to reset the Power Management Unit. Or whatever
they call it for your Mac:
< http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Management_Unit> is a good start.
It's also called variously System Management Unit, or System
Management Controller (Intel).
It could be as easy as unplugging the machine from the wall for a few
minutes, or opening up the box and pushing a teeny-little button on
the motherboard...
Hope that helps.
