Storing passwords on an iPod

[Ruebeck, Chris]Chris Ruebeck - 03:37am Dec 13, 2007 PST

The last function that my Palm V was good for was storing passwords. I used GNU Keyring, which became Keyring for PalmOS. But now I've got an Intel Mac, can't sync with my Palm V, and don't want to buy a new PDA.

On the other hand, I've got an iPod nano (first or second generation, not the latest) and I carry it everywhere now. Is there any application that will sync my passwords onto the nano, preferably asking for a password before showing them to me on the Nano?

This would be less good than the PDA because I won't be able to enter the passwords on the nano. But I mostly need to view passwords, not enter them.

Thanks!

The Notes extra on iPods can read text files, so you could have your
passwords as plain text and view them on the go. No encryption, so if
your iPod is stolen, you're out of luck, but that may be acceptable if
you keep it on you at all times. (vis a vis Bruce Schneier's
suggestion that you keep your passwords in your wallet.)

The Nano is also a "hard drive" (flash, actually), so what I do is store an
encrypted disk image containing a file containing my passwords. To see the
passwords I have to hook up to a computer, copy the file over, and open and
decrypt it. Okay, so the iPod does not "show me the passwords on the Nano",
but if I'm not sitting at a computer I don't *need* the passwords. m.

Thanks for the ideas. I would think a "password" wouldn't be too hard to implement on the iPod even without a touchscreen. Just choose from a combination of letters and numbers. And I bet there would be a Keyring for iPod out there if it was easier to develop for the iPod.
