10.4.11 Issue with Quickverse

[jsparks929]jsparks929 (apparently) - 03:37am Dec 13, 2007 PST

I'm hoping for help from the knowledgeable members of this group.

Since upgrading to 10.4.11 a program which I use heavily Quickverse
is nonfunctional. I have already tried deleting and reinstalling it
manually then also using the uninstaller from the website. I have
been in communication with the developer who says they are aware of
the problem and a fix is coming but have not seen it nor have they
provided any further follow-up. (3 weeks and counting)

As I see it I have two choices: find another reasonably priced Bible
program or revert to 10.4.10.

1. How difficult is it to revert to 10.4.10? I have a complete backup
of my documents etc. made at the time of the update (immediately
before) and could easily save those created since the update. However
the backup is not bootable. A further concern is the security update
included in 10.4.11.

2. Can anyone suggest a replacement Bible program? It must have
multiple translations, Strong's numbers with concordance, dictionary
(s), and at least a couple of commentaries. Ideally it would also
have a Greek and a Hebrew language text Bible as well (which is the
only major drawback to Quickverse before this problem). Nice to have
would be an atlas or maps section and Calvin's Institutes both of
which are in Quickverse. As a seminary student cost is a critical
factor.

I am using an iBook G4 1.42 (mid 2005) 1 GB ram, 60 GB hard drive.

Thank you for your help,

Jean

I can think of three right off the bat:

1. MacSword, available for free (suggested donation):

http://www.macsword.com. Browse the "News" link for information about a relatively recent beta release.

Modules, commentaries, languages, et al., available http://www.crosswire.org/sword/modules/ModDisp.jsp?modType=Bibles

2. The Macintosh Online Bible. I used the Classic version of this application during graduate school, and it offers everything you're looking for, including Calvin's Institutes. They released an OSX beta, v.3.9.10y36, just last week. The install routine appears clunky, but it also appears that the old classic modules work under OSX. Might be worth playing around with it to see if it will work for you. The .dmg download is free, but many of the useful modules require purchase of a CD. In graduate school, all of it was free, which is why I used it.

3. The macdaddy of Mac bible software appears to be Accordance, a commercial product with version support back to OS8 (!) for churches and missions with old hardware. Multiple packages available at various pricepoints:

Interesting though slightly long in the tooth breakdown of Mac bible software here:

"ACCORDANCE" could answer at least some of your requirements. I've
found it useful. One drawback is that the basic version (which is
what I have) only has two translations. Other extensions to the basic
version may have other translations. Cost may be a drawback,
however. Oak Tree Software, www.accordancebible.com, 1-877-339-5855

Yes. Try Accordance:

http://www.accordancebible.com

It has many modules available, priced separately, so you can pick and
choose what you can want.

Re: 10.4.11 Issue with Quickverse

MacSword will provide most of what you're looking for and it's free. Their biggest problem is that they don't have most of the major modern translations (e.g., NLT, NIV, NASB). They recently added the ESV.

Accordance is really slick (at least from using the demo version), but it's really expensive--much more so than QuickVerse.

The support from QuickVerse is really disappointing. They've know since at least early July 2007 that neither QuickVerse Mac (2005) and QuickVerse Mac 2007 worked with Safari 3–I sent a problem report on 7/3/2007 and received a canned response about uninstalling the Safari 3 beta. When Leopard was about to be released, they encouraged QuickVerse users not to upgrade for a month so they could fix QuickVerse. Almost two months after Leopard's release and still no fix.

I would strongly recommend that you take a good look at Accordance. It has a broad range of features that can service the needs of the casual user all the way up to the professional scholar. Many people even run it on PCs using an emulator.

No commercial relationship, just a more-than-satisfied customer.

Re: 10.4.11 Issue with Quickverse

I am a long time user of Online Bible. I endured the two or three years it took for them to get the beta version ready for OS X. I have been a beta tester since they started the upgrade. I am guessing that the final version will be ready in 2008 as the last tweaking is done. At this point the beta version is free. If you have the classic version of OLB, you have all you need to get started. The OS X program works with all the old modules in much the same way as it was originally designed.

Another economical way to build your library is through AGES digital library. [http://www.ageslibrary.com/index.html] All their books are in PDF format (scanned right out of the originals) and are fully searchable. They have many of the old classics that are now in public domain.

If you use Firefox there is a nifty Bible Toolbar available that connects you directly to BibleGateway.com. It lets you choose two versions that are always present in the tool bar. [http://www.bibletoolbar.net/]

Here are some sites where I have found online Christian books (PDF) for free downloading. [http://philologos.org/online.htm] [http://2020ok.com/tags/baptist.htm] [http://www.baptiststart.com/doctrine.htm] [http://www.pbministries.org/]

I trust that this information will be of a help. Many of us are still looking for the best deals when it comes to buying hardware and software. God bless you in your preparation for the ministry.
