New Apple Store in New York/Scrolling in iPod Touch and iPhone David Weintraub (apparently) - 03:37am Dec 13, 2007 PSTvia emailI decided to take a little walk yesterday to the new Apple store. This
store is known as Apple Soho, but Soho stands for "South of Houston"
street, so this store -- more than a dozen blocks North of Houston
Street -- isn't in Soho, but in the Meat Packing district.
The store is huge, but the glass spiral staircase take up 40% of the
retail space, so the overall store really isn't that big. I know this
because I could count the windows on the facade. Two windows for the
stairs and three windows for the rest of the store. The first floor is
filled with Macs. The second floor is filled with iPods and the third
floor is the Genius bar and classes.
Like most Apple stores, it looks quite sparse when compared to other
computer stores. However, the best way to think of this is as a
pamphlet layout. Apple makes excellent use of "whitespace". The three
floors, wide windows, and bright uncrowded interior really draws
people in. The store was pretty packed with people, but the layout of
the store made it not seem so crowded.
I played around with the iPod Touch since I am thinking of getting one
as my Palm replacement. And, I came up with a question about Safari on
the iPhone and iPod touch: How do you scroll in things like Google
Maps? There are many web pages that implement Google Maps (I have one
at http://hperuv.org and another one is at
http://www.onnyturf.com/subway/) and you cannot scroll around the map
since dragging with your finger drags around the whole Safari desktop.
Is there a way of "pinning" the Safari page and allow you to scroll the maps?

if you get an ipod touch, i'd like to know how it works out. i've
also considered this asd a solution to the pda problem. the things i
want most are calendar, contacts. web access and my passwords.

The Apple SOHO store is south of Houston St (not far south) at 103
Prince St. It was the first Apple store in the city.
The new store is at West 14th St and 9th Ave. In the meatpacking
district.
I have been to neither (nor the others), and it is hugely unlikely
that I ever will be (although should I find myself through some error
in NYC, I will visit one or more.

Just to dispel the confusion here ... in all, there are three Apple
retail stores on Manhattan. In addition to the 24-hour store on Fifth
Avenue in midtown, there is indeed an Apple Soho store which is indeed
in the SoHo neighborhood south of Houston. This was the very first of
the three to open in Manhattan -- in fact, I believe, one of the first
to open worldwide. It is still right there at 103 Prince Street.
The Fifth Avenue store opened next, and is a 24/7/365 operation. It
stands in the plaza in front of the old GM Building, now Trump Tower. In
the past this plaza was constructed as a grade-level "square donut"
around a large open space one or two stories below street level. The
lower plaza was surrounded by restaurants and stores. The Fifth Avenue
Apple Store has enclosed the entire plaza at grade level with the
exception of the stunning entrance constructed entirely of clear glass
so that the view of the plaza for street-level observers is not
obstructed. < http://www.apple.com/retail/fifthavenue/>
The new store you visited on West 14th Street is called just that, West
14th Street. < http://www.apple.com/retail/west14thstreet/>. There's a
nice photo gallery including shots of the quintessentially New York-ish
opening crowd.

now, that's a really good question (which I've yet to even "touch an
iTouch" or iPhone) ... I'd bet one of the Genuises at that 65' Genius
Bar could answer ...

That's my plans. I'd get an iPhone, but I am wedded to T-Mobile's
service. It is cheaper and much more dependable than AT&T's service --
especially in the NY/NJ area where I romp.
The iPod touch has a calender and contact list, but lacks a notes
application which would be nice. I am really waiting to see what
happens at MacWorld this January. My hope that the iPod Touch will be
expanded just a bit to include other standard applications like the
notepad, iChat, email, stocks, and Google maps. Plus, I'd like to see
whether or not the SDK will be announced. Third party apps on the iPod
Touch would definitely make it a complete Palm replacement.
I don't care much about a camera. My various cellphones over the last
decade have had cameras on them, but I've taken maybe a 1/2 dozen
pictures. Besides, the iPod Touch wouldn't replace my cellphone (with
built in camera) anyway. Bluetooth would be nice: cordless headphones,
wireless connection to my computer for moving files back and forth,
and the ability to dial my cellphone via the address book.
Even with the iPod Touch, I'd probably keep my regular iPod although
I'll probably download my podcasts to the iPod Touch (especially the
video podcasts). We'll see what happens in January (and my Birthday
which conveniently comes just a few weeks after the MacWorld Expo).

Selznick software has an application named Password Wallet that has
Palm, Mac, and iPhone/iTouch components so that you can have your
password database on the road. It's editable on the Palm but is
unfortunately read only on the iPhone/iTouch, they use an encrypted
bookmark of some sort to move the data to Safari.

You're right. I've been to all three stores. I don't know why I
thought this one was referred to as the Soho store -- especially since
it isn't in Soho.

Believe it or not. No one at the Genius bar knew. It might be an
interface weakness of Safari on the iPhone and iPod Touch. I was going
to play around a bit more, but their WiFi went down, so I couldn't use
Safari on the iPod Touches in the store.

Not sure if it was mentioned yet, but 1Password can do this too.

It must be something in how those specific sites are implementing Google Maps: other sites I've used that
link to Google Maps actually switch you to the iPhone's Google Maps application when you click (similar to
clicking on a YouTube video will launch the YouTube app). Once you're in Google Maps, you can scroll around
with your finger, but obviously that doesn't work within a web page.
To fix this, the site would have to change how they're embedding Google Maps on the page (perhaps they're
using an older API or something) or they could offer a separate link for iPhone users that would launch the
native Google Maps.
I did notice that the first site you mentioned, http://hperuv.org, has a handy link to a PDF (at the very
top, for printing purposes). That worked perfectly on the iPhone, displaying the PDF and allowing me to
"pinch" zoom and scroll around it, so that's one alternative.
