Leopard File Sharing

A postscript to Glenn's excellent article on Leopard's File Sharing features...

The minimum requirement to accessing AFP-over-IP volumes is Mac OS
7.6, with installation of AppleShare Client 3.8.3.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58360

Choosing the right AppleShare Client for your classic Mac OS was a
rather delicate endeavor. The readme for AppleShare Client 3.8.8
includes a comprehensive (and difficult to parse) listing of which
client should be used with which Mac OS versions.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60792

I remember those days well, because my central AFP servers were freed
from the horrors of tunneling AppleTalk, and could at last provide
native TCP/IP service, just like the big boys. I haven't cared about
the AppleTalk protocol in some years, nor FastPaths nor GatorBoxes,
and I like it that way.

Oh, and the glorious date of 19-Nov-97, in which LaserWriter 8.5.1
was released, finally allowing Mac OS 7.1.1-7.6 to print over
LPR/LPD. Many beers were slayed in celebration.

Sort of. It took a while to get it to work right with Solaris and other LP*
print servers. (wasn't sending the right UserID at first.) That was one of
my first RADAR bugs.

Now that you mention it... my testing was done with the cooperation of
a 'nix admin down the hall, and it turned out that the LPD I was
testing against had been written by him. It was amusing to find that
the DanWare LPD worked fine, but many of the vendor-supplied ones did
not.

Re: Leopard File Sharing

I have a problem with AppleShare ever since upgrading some of my Macs to 10.4.

I have an old Mac running OS 8.1 with AppleShare 3.8.8. I can connect to that Mac from Mac OS X 10.3.9, but NOT from Mac OS X 10.4.11. The OS 8.1 Mac only sees a 10.3.9 Mac, but none of the 10.4.11 Macs in my network. All the 10.x Macs can connect to each other. FileSharing and AppleTalk are active on all Macs.

Any suggestions on getting the 8.1 Mac to connect to the 10.4 Macs and vice versa?
