I don't think Skype should be modifying itself.
That would make tools like Tripwire fail as well (tripwire checksums
binaries and warns you if they change).
No application should modify itself--that's what preferences, plists,
and other data files are for.

Skype does a lot of things wrong. It doesn't use the keychain, for
example.
