Installing Leopard on a 24" iMac
via email
I just bought a new 24" 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme iMac. It didn't come
with Leopard preinstalled, but the store gave me a free copy of Leopard.
The installation took about an hour and went smoothly. The only minor
glitches:
At first the iMac wouldn't recognize my Apple wireless keyboard. Turning the
keyboard off and on again caused it to be recognized.
Default Folder hung and wouldn't quit until I forced a quit and a reboot and
then DF loaded and ran as normal.
My copy of APE was up to date, so I had no problem there.
I used the Migration Assistant to import my applications, documents, and
settings to the new iMac. It took about 1 1/2 hours. The only glitch in the
migration was that double-clicking on a Word document would try to launch
the preinstalled trial copy of Word, which an error message said had
expired. Deinstalling the trial copy of Office allowed Word documents to
launch my own registered copy of Word 2004.
I love the huge screen. No reflection problems in my room. I can use
Entourage in preview mode and display most messages below the list of
messages without having to actually open each message. Makes reading mail
much easier.
I can open just about any two application windows side by side in a font
size that is quite readable by my aging eyes--the main reason I went for the
24" screen.
I've always kept the Dock on the right because I felt I didn't have room for
it at the bottom of the screen. Now I do, and I have the luxury of seeing my
application icons much more clearly in a larger size.
When the iMac has been booted up, the time between clicking on the Safari
icon and being connected to Google is less than a second. Very cool.
