Scanning problems in Leopard

Scanner Failure from Photoshop and VueScan after updating to Leopard Max
OS 10.5

In Photoshop I selected import--> From Canon MP960
and when I hit either "Preview"or "Scan" the scan window locks up on a
blank white window.

VueScan found a Canon MP960, but wasn't able to access it. It gave me a
error message:
"See the Mac OS X section of the VueScan Release Notes for info about
renaming the .btn file to .btn.sav."

I searched my Mac Pro but found no file ".btn" to update.

I have latest Canon drivers.

Thank you!

Re: Scanning problems in Leopard

I have the i800 ScanMaker Microtech scanner and the factory software
is Scan Wizard 5. There is another one that I haven't ever tried. This
combo worked great under Jaguar, Panther and Tiger but neither works
under Leopard. My Mac is the iMac G5 1.8 GHz. I'd like to
read of others experience with the Microtech scanner (as well as
others).

I have received word from Microtek that Scan Wizard is not compatible
with Leopard. Their only suggestion is to install Scan Wizard Pro v.
7.541 which is available on their web site. You have to download 6
separate files of about 4.5 to 5 MB apiece. One annoyance with Scan
Wizard Pro is that when you do the final scan you get a file naming
panel and you are restricted to a SINGLE letter name!

I have a ScanMaker 4700 which worked well on my iMac G5, until
Leopard. Now ScanWizard 5 just aborts. On your suggestion, I
downloaded Scan Wizard Pro v.741 from their web site. This runs but
does not recognize my particular scanner. It seems Microtek Knowledge
Base is correct when it says that there are no drivers for Mac OS X
10.5 ! They are working on it but there is no release date.

Try VueScan
<http://www.hamrick.com/>

They list the i800 as 'supported' and it is leopard compatible :)
(it also does a pretty good job!)

Re: Scanning problems in Leopard

My Epson 1650 stopped working in Leopard (inside of Photoshop) via Twain. It's old and the epson driver will no longer install as it did in Tiger. But "Image capture" will find the scanner and works well and does have a preference to send the scan into Photoshop. A small inconvenience.

Re: Scanning problems in Leopard

I'm using an HP All-In-One - the FJ2180. Printing works just fine after a clean install; scanning doesn't work at all, either from the device end or the Leopard end. Amazing that they would update the printing driver and forget about the scanning.

The disk installer breaks, endlessly copying the same series of files until you force quit. Didn't fix anything either. No mention of problem on HP site.

I already know the solution is to buy a new scanner, but I still run a UMAX 2100U (USB) scanner under Classic, and there are no OSX drivers available.

Have you tried to use it with the SANE system? The list of supported scanners does include the Umax 2100 U: <http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html> (scroll down for manufacturer UMAX)

The mac os x port can be found here: <http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/>

Installation is not as straight forward as we are used to, and I had initial problems (with a not-too-old Epson scanner) bringing the scanner to be recognized, but a reboot solved that.

One also need to play with the settings to get an adequate scan compared to the manufacturer-provided drivers, but at least it works under OS X, even with an Intel Mac.

Might be worth a try.

Cheers, Kei.

Re: Scanning problems in Leopard

I have the same problem with my Microtek ScanMaker 6000 - I just tried this solution of using "Image Capture" and not only did it not recognize my scanner but it also shouts down when I try and do anything in it? Strange - anyone else hear of any problems with Image Capture in Leopard?
