Can you finally share the Shared folder? John Faughnan - 08:27am Oct 27, 2007 PSTGuest UserOne of the craziest things about OS X was that you couldn't share the SHARED folder. So the one folder designed to be accessible by all users on a machine couldn't be shared on a network. Have they at last fixed that?

In Leopard you can easily share any folder; sharing Shared was one if
the first things I did. (It's not shared by default.)

Yes they have. Apple has overhauled the Network Sharing prefs and you
can now share folders and other volumes. You also have the ability to
setup sharing only users and create specific rights for each thing you
are sharing. There are numerous other features as well, improved SMB
and now, finally, connecting to slow share or having a share disappear
no longer results in the beach ball of death. As I mentioned in
another thread, the new Sharing alone makes Leopard worth it for me.

This is how Microsoft walked the road to virus and worm headaches. Now you're sharing something that others who use the computer very much NOT want to be shared. Which was the likely logic to begin with. MS for years put ease of sharing information above security.

The problem is you still have wonky permissions problems with files
put in the Shared folder...

I believe some programs use the Shared folder for certain information you
may not want shared as well.
iTunes has a SC Info folder that doesn't normally show up but contains some
security info for iTunes.
On my machine World of Warcraft has a folder in there as well. No idea
what is in it (account info?)

I'm personally talking about a computer in my home office. I'm the only
sit-in-front-of-it user; the other users are family members who want a
shared folder for files everyone can access. In my situation, sharing Shared
over the local network serves the same purpose as it normally does for
sit-in-front-of-the-computer users: a folder for people with accounts on the
computer. (I don't have Shared shared for guests or "everyone.")
