If you don't need to be on the cutting edge, I'm guessing from past
performance that 10.5.1 will be out within two weeks of the initial
release.

The problems haven't usually been extreme, but there certainly have
been problems with those initial releases.

cheers... -Adam

It's pin point my own humble opinion too. (but I'll be more verbose,
sorry)

Why jump in fast when a few weeks can secure any nasty or not so
nasty issues?
Is it mandatory to jump in because Apple tells us so?

Wait. It's our computers, it's our data, it's our user experience.

As much as I'm sure Leopard will be a great release (oh, I've
internalized the marketing message! lol), I don't push my "need" to
be up to date in front of my need of having a secure experience for
me and my documents. I need a stable OS with elements in working as
expected, not at least some little bugs that can be ridden of fast a
few weeks later.

In this regard, to wait till the 10.5.1 will clear most current bugs.
I need Safari (for this one I'm rather confident) and Mail to work as
expected, I work with them, so a little wait before dealing with the
eventual bugs just to know if I'll be able to work continuously is GOOD.

It's not that I'm not confident into Apple capacity to deliver a
workable OS. It's a way to preserve my delightful experience as a
user so that I can still rant on the issues Apple has not still
corrected without compromising it. :))

So Leopard for me, in a few weeks only too. :)

There are certainly benefits to waiting, but there are benefits to not
waiting as well. The sooner I get used to 10.5, the sooner I am able
to answer stupid questions about 10.5. The sooner I install it and
use it, the sooner I can provide Apple with feedback on what the
screwed up and need to fix ASAP.<1> The sooner I get 10.5 installed,
the bigger jump I have on the issues that do crop up, and the better I
am able to deal with them.

Keep in mind, just because, let's say, Apple releases 10.5.1 on Nov 15
doesn't mean that all the users who install Leopard in the next 3
months will update to 10.5.1, they will install 10.5 and many will
stay right there with 10.5 (heck last month I updated a system for
10.4.0 to 10.4.10!!)

Re: Wait for 10.5.1?

I generally suggest to friends and family (i.e. the people I have to
support) that they wait until the dust clears following the release.
After a major OS release, there are bugs, applications that don't
work, and usually work-arounds and fixes for all those problems.
Within a couple weeks or a month, it's pretty safe, even if the 10.x.1
release hasn't shown up yet.

Re: Wait for 10.5.1?

Waiting for 10.5.1 is a good strategy, but installing it and getting used to it works as well.

My plan is to install Leopard on a separate partition and reload all my applications from scratch. Yes, a huge pain, but my system has acquired so many mysterious little gremlins since Mac OS X 10.0. There are literally hundreds of preferences and .plist files that probably do NOT need to be on my Mac. It's time for some kind of fresh start.

When I need to actually work, I'll boot into Tiger.

Once I've got Leopard fairly well set AND 10.5.1 has been released AND various applications and utilities have been updated to support Leopard, THEN I'll make the shift. Reformat my MacBook Pro hard drive and use the Migration Assistant to import everything from my Leopard holding hard drive. THEN I'll import all my data.

It all sounds like a bit of a pain, but it needs to be done.
