If you have a home theater or similar already, you can get a $10 to $20 dock that allows the iPod to stay powered and feeds the earphone jack into the existing system.

I just played with this system at Sam's Club, which includes a
subwoofer and doubles as an AM/FM radio alarm clock,. For the price
I was quite impressed:

However, if you already have a home stereo, you will more than likely
get the best sound (for the lowest investment) by playing your iPod

and while we're at it, I'd love to hear people's feedback about
speaker systems that might work with an iphone.

I may be mistaken, but at this writing I don't there is such a thing
as an "officially-supported" iphone speaker dock.

I would LOVE to see something like that, as I have both an iHome clock radio and an under-kitchen-cabinet unit that will play from my iPhone but do a really good job of broadcasting the GSM radio signals if the iPhone is not in "Airplane Mode".

The "FAQ" page on ihomeaudio.com continues to have the same info they put up when the iPhone was first released: "iHome is currently working on new iPhone compatible products." <http://www.ihomeaudio.com/faq.asp?product_id=10201>

I'd love to hear if that will change in time for Christmas! :-)

The best system that I have heard (that was strictly for iPods) was the Bose system.  Simple to use and typical Bose sound - but not cheap.  $275 - but you can get a 'factory' refurbished (Thru any Bose store)  for  $225  - that is the only price break I have seen.

The Bose SoundDock is a solid, easy-to-use system, but its $300 price tag
hasn't changed since it was introduced several years ago. In the interim,
many quality competing products have been released, some offering better
performance at lower prices.

Perhaps the best example is Logitech's Pure-Fi Elite, which sounds better
than the SoundDock and offers a good number of additional features.
Considering that the $300-MSRP Pure-Fi Elite is available for only $130 from
Amazon, it's perhaps the best value in iPod speakers right now:

Well, as the old adage goes, "No highs, no lows, must be Bose". I've
found you can usually do a lot better than Bose for the same price.
I ended up buying a pair of hi-fi speakers plus an old amplifier,
instead of some iPod-specific system or a set of computer speakers. It
may not be the smallest possible solution, but it sure sounds good.

Sorry to respond to my own message, but I did find a speaker system
that I'm happy with for my iphone.

It's not going to be right for everyone, as it is a mini satellite
system and not a one-piece portable unit, but it works well enough for
me.

(and it's the satellite configuration that makes it easy to separate
the iphone from the speakers, thus avoiding the GSM interference)

For whatever reason I am unable to set the alarm on my iH5 model to wake to music from any of my playlists. It plays for a multitude of times ranging from 10 min. to thirty and then followed by a chirping sound. However if I select music, albums or artists it seems to be ok per operating inst. Any advice on what to do would be greatly appreciated.
