in November.

And for months now, all the haters (as I am) of Orange (France
Telecom) for its pricing, politics and offers are ranting…

Mind that the Orange vision of an unlimited data plan is to set a
limit to it… ;)))

If I wanted an iPhone as even if it's a little wonder, I'm not at all
sure I have the use, not to mention the price with the ridiculous
change rate with the premium paid by european as usual (note for
Apple: do you really know the $ is wayyy down? $1.4299 for €1, Apple
has always been out in space with change rates, but it's skyrocketing
now). But at €399, I certainly won't buy even with better provider
like SFR (which doesn't have an EDGE network anyway). We're still
waiting for the plans, but we're not very optimistic.

Now thanks to the French regulations, we'll have lawful unlocked
iPhones, which Apple should have done from day one.

Hey Kirk, what a business opportunity for you. Just buy unlocked
iPhones and send them out, with a small fee for yourself of course.
That is if they work outside of France.

Yes, but at what price? There's no law that says the have to be
affordable.

Perhaps but no details have been released yet.

What will be the price? What does the law *require* Apple and/or Orange to
do? In other words, can they sell one unlocked phone on the docks of
Marseilles and say, "There - we've fulfilled the law".

Are they required to have X number of unlocked phones available at any one
time/place/store/location? And who will do the unlocking and how - Orange or
Apple? Will the unlocked phones work outside of France?

Enquiring minds want to know...

€399 for the iPhone
The plans by Orange are not published yet as the unlocked iPhone price.

No there must be iPhones unlocked available at any time, but the
price can be in skyrocket mode.

It must be available, but I'm sure if the consumer unions find that
none is in fact for sale, there will be some retribution in court…

As soon as we'll have more details, I'll post them.

As for now, there's an import of iPhones, unlocked, available in some
supermarkets for about 2 weeks. Still no legal action from Apple.

After some Leclerc supermarkets IRL, latest is amazon.fr

www.macbidouille.com.news/2007-10-21/#15170

still no news from the Orange offering plan

Amazon.fr is advertising at 945 euros with no mention of carrier:
<http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B0002W4P0C?pf_rd_m=A1X6FK5RDHNB96&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=039DN05D33N6DF3RV1GT&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=136509591&pf_rd_i=405320>

If the link goes away, Why Travel To France has a screenshot:

Somehow I doubt that there are enough early
adopters in France willing to pay that price.
(Though maybe the company will eventually offer a
100 euro salve...)

iPhones need to be activated through iTunes. Apple already restricts iTunes accounts by country. I think it would be a simple thing for them to require unlocked iPhones to be activated only by French iTunes accounts (unless the French law stops this of course)

And probably the iPhone interface and on-screen keyboard is in French,
which restricts its use considerably.

Even though I'm nearly fluent in French and live in Montreal, I would buy one.

Of course it's an official unofficial unlocked item…

A company imports them unlocked from the USA, don't ask ut more… I've
posted about it it's somewhere on the list.

In fact, there's an affair at the EU level running, about the
restriction to local iTMS, it's forbidden by the EU regulations, we
should be able to buy from any EU iTMS, we'll see when the procedure
will be finished…

Remember it's OS X, and you can change the language…

Plus, it's not a hardware keyboard!

Not yet. The current iPhone comes with only English for the user
interface and, until the recent firmware update, could only input
English. Now it can create accented Latin at least. But it is a
very, very long way from having the language capabilities of the full
OS X.

Re: Apple Goes with Orange

Another vendor for the unlocked iPhone in France : www.phoneandphone.com

Locked 379 € (locked to Bouygues telecom!)
Unlocked 749 €

These are US iPhones, imported, unlocked, changed to French. There's
our mandatory one year warranty.

It's 200 € higher than Lixao earlytel.com at 549 €. These must be the
same (available for a few days now) but the company has not explained
much more than give the usual warnings as for all unlocked iPhones
issues. They should make a large advertisement campaign in the Paris
area soon.

One note of importance: as the unlocking process is not intrusive,
the Apple warranty should still work.

Still no news from Orange about the offering save trials as Orange
wants its exclusivity respected.

And since they use a AZERTY keyboard layout in France my guess is that the
French version of the iPhone will be pretty hard to use for a user that is
used to a QWERTY keyboard layout. Every time I use a computer in France my
fingers get stuck and I'm not even a touch typist.
But maybe Apple surprises us and the French version of the iPhone will have
a choice of keyboard layout. One can dream...

I don't know, since you are only using one finger instead of 10. But
in any case, the iPod Touch comes with QWERTY, AZERTY, QWERTZ
(German) and QZERTY (Italian) options, so I would expect the iPhone
will eventually have the same.
