3G Cell Data iPhone Now Feasible

There's a long way to go between "engineering samples" and a working,
tested phone. 3 to 6 months is, in my opinion, a real stretch. Here's
a news article quote from yesterday (Monday, October 15), "We have
engineering samples and we anticipate that HSUPA phones targeting the
mid-tier price market using the part will be on sale during the first
half of 2009," Mike Civiello, senior director of marketing at
Broadcom's Mobile and Wireless business unit told EE Times Europe .
Broadcomm is trying to break into this market, and has a very good PR
department. While they brag that they are a year ahead of rivals,
don't count Texas Instruments and Qualcomm out yet. Also, they don't
yet have a license from Qualcomm, yet, which will be a requirement
before selling commercial quantities.
The feature set they talk about, however, shows the direction the
wireless industry is going; and represents the expanded features that
will be available with ubiquitous 3G networks.

With 5 hour talk time battery life? I don't think so.

I've heard people complain that the N95 has a battery life of 2-3
hours talking.

I saw a demo of a prototype of the N95 at the Geoware 2007 conference
in March: it would work for 15 minutes with GPS...

On the other hand, the University of Aarhus did a cooperation with
the public authorities in Aarhus at a large event recently (Tall
Ships' Race) where they were tracking all or a number of officers at
the site using the GPS from N95. (among other things relating to
planning and executing a public event.) Each officer had (at least) 2
of them, as one had to be in the charger at all times, as they had
the same experience: about 2 hrs. pr. charge.

Quite interesting project btw.: <http://www.ist-palcom.org/>
