A niggling little contextual menu problem

[andrew.kaizen]andrew.kaizen - 04:44am Oct 9, 2007 PST

When I Ctrl-Click on a file in Finder and choose to Open With... I find that there are two entries in the menu for QuickTime, Safari and TextEdit. It's no big deal, it just bugs me every time I see it. Does anyone know of a configuration file that I can edit to remove the duplicates? By the way, I checked and I have two copies of QuickTime (one in OSX and one in OS 9) and only one copy each of Safari and TextEdit.

Many thanks,

Andrew Burke

Re: A niggling little contextual menu problem

I think I can answer my own question. After posting the above message I found the terminal command:

/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

within the comments at this page:

Classic LaunchServices database problem, solved by resetting it as described in:

If you prefer to avoid using terminal, use Pilot which will kill or correct the LaunchServices database problem - for a while

MainMenu which is really too useful for words also has a Rebuild LaunchServices option. <http://www.santasw.com>
