Running and vehicle-use logging on the iPhone

[dave28c]dave28c (apparently) - 03:03pm Oct 8, 2007 PST
via email - Dave Clark

So, now I've given up my Treo for an iPhone, and a month or so ago
someone answered my query about a "runners log" and "vehicle log" to
replace the Palm-based ones on the Treo. I found a pretty good
online Runners-cycling etc log (http://www.progresslog.com), but just
cannot find anything similar for keeping track of vehicle use. I've
created some excel spreadsheets, but would frankly rather use
something online. My google search came up negative for anything for
the Mac.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't know if there are archives
to search of this list, and more importantly maybe someone knows
offhand of a good vehicle log online program or Mac-based piece of
software to use.

Thanks.

You could use Google's online apps . . . they have a spreadsheet
available.

If you are looking to manage mileage for the car,

http://mymilemarker.com

has a reasonably slick interface. I don't actually use it since I just
calculate mileage when I do fill-ups and write them on a piece of
paper in the glovebox. It's not digital but it's very easy to use.

You might be interested in EditGrid <http://www.editgrid.com/> which
has spreadsheets on the web (Mac, Linux, Windows) with a beta for
iPhone (wherein you can edit the spreadsheet using the iPhone).
"Personal" is free; higher levels aren't--personal should do what you
describe.

Likewise, and for me it is necessary (the gas gauge hasn't worked
since about 1993--it shows full until there are about 5 gallons left,
at which point it plunges to empty in about 25 miles). So I need to
record the odometer reading on when filling up. I'd just use the
trip odometer, but control over it (and most other electronic dash
stuff) failed in around 1998. And the miles remaining indicator does
notice that the tank has been filled (how?), but goes to zero in
about 50 miles.

I haven't run out of gas since the gauge failed--I did once in this
car when it was working.

We're talking about a 1986 Ford Taurus with 370,000 miles--it's
entitled to a few little foibles. (Adam--same car I squeezed into
the driveway in Renton.)
