Why the "rebate hassle"?

You mentioned in the Sept 17th issue of TidBits that the iPhone
rebate could be simpler. You mentioned three steps:

1). You enter your phone number and iPhone serial number
2). Apple sends you an SMS message. You enter this and your phone
number into the form.
3). When you do that, you get a credit number and a pin.

The reason Apple goes through step #2 is very simple: They are only
giving the rebate to people who have a valid ATT contract. If you
don't have a contract, you can't recieve an SMS message.

Erm.. a valid contract, yes, but where in this process are we
assuming a valid _ATT_ contract?

You can if you've hacked your iPhone and put in a T-Mobile SIM.

I would be very interested to hear if anyone who has unblocked their
iPhone and thus is using a different carrier has received the rebate,
anyone ?

Thanks much,

Maybe not this one, though. Mine came as a free AT&T message. The
same sort that AT&T was able to send me before the phone number
switched from Verizon to AT&T. Clearly there is some infrastructure
which "knows more" than a normal SMS send does.
