Can QuickBooks open Windows files?
Matt Neuburg (apparently)
- 06:03am Sep 17, 2007 PSTvia emailApropos of nothing, but I thought someone here might know... I downloaded
the free trial of QuickBooks Pro for Mac to see if it could open a
QuickBooks Windows file someone gave me. It couldn't - it just quits when I
try to open the file. Does anyone know whether QuickBooks can share data
between Mac and Windows, because if it can't, this isn't going to be a
possible solution for the problem I'm facing... Thanks! m.

It's actually a lot easier than Quicken:
The format of the data file seems different on each side, but it's
easy enough to make & restore from backup, so just do it that way:
have Quickbooks make a backup file (.QBB), then bring that over.
That's it.
The format used for backups appears to be the same for the Windows
and Mac versions.
With Quicken on the other hand, you have to export a .QIF interchange
file, then create a new data file on the Mac, and load the .QIF file
in to it, but not everything translotes over from Windows to Mac
versions cleanly, so then you have to go look things over to see if
they look right, etc.
Quickbooks is much less headache for this sort of thing.

This link talks about converting from Windows to Mac version:
http://quickbooks.intuit.com/product/accounting_software/pro_mac_financial_management_software.jhtml?view=faq#tabAnchor
I recall (but am not certain), that you cannot go the other way.
They will talk to you about it if you call their sales line (see # at
top of that FAQ page).
If you want to discuss off-line, I use QB on Windows. I installed the
Mac version on a friend's system, and have helped her get started
with it.
