If you have a phone that can use mp3 or aac files as ringtones, it is
simple to create ringtones using nothing more than iTunes. For
example, here is the method that I use for my Motrorola Razr V3r from
AT&T to use an excerpt from a song I already have on iTunes as a
ringtone:

1) Make a copy of the tune in the appropriate format from which you
will extract the ringtone (the Razr can use mp3 or aac)
2) Make sure the copy is registered to iTunes (starting to play it
will make sure)
3) For the copied song, in Itunes, go to the Options tab of the
GetInfo window.
3a) In that window, you can select the section of the tune (by time)
to use. Play around until you get it right.
4) Copy the tune to the appropriate directory on the phone.

I have not done this with DRM protected music, but since most of
music is ripped from my own CDs, this is not a problem.

Erm, no, that leaves you with a full track on your phone.

Skip steps 1 and 2

step 3b open up the options for itunes, go to advanced -> importing
and set them to something low (I use 96K and set the channels to
mono), use VBR (medium), filter low frequencies, and enable smart
encoding adjustments.

step 3c back in iTunes, go to advanced menu and select "Convert
Selection to MP3" (or AAC if you used that).

step 4, copy the NEW tune to your phone. Uncheck the tune in your
itunes library and change it's genre to 'ringtone' so you can find it
later, but it won't accidently play in a playlist.
