Ringtones for iPhone

[dave28c]dave28c (apparently) - 01:41am Sep 14, 2007 PST

Here's the latest from David Pogue about Ringtones from Apple for iPhone:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/13/technology/circuits/13pogue-email.html?8cir&em

He bluntly describes the whole business as a rip-off by the record companies.

Surely there must be a way in iTunes or something on my Macs to achieve the same thing.

I use iToner. No, it's not free, but it rocks.

I would disagree with that. Provide a service and charge what the bear. We
may not like ringtones but if a company can make money selling them, why not
let them?

Of course there is. Depending on your technical sophistication, it can be
easy or it can be hard:

8 Ways to get Ringtones onto Your iPhone

Obviously, for a lot of people, it's easier to simply buy them from Apple or
other providers.

Is there a free or inexpensive program to make MP3 snippets?

Many reasons. First off, these companies use their monopoly position
(with regards to any individual customer the company is a complete
monopoly) to cripple their hardware so that you have to buy ringtones
instead of providing your own. This is why Veriscum disabled
bluetooth file transfers on their phones for so long.

Second, the content cartel maggots are keeping ALL of that money.

Third, you already bought the music, but you are forced, again, by
crippled hardware and DRM and DMCA BS to purchase it again, at
obscene prices (equivalent to more than $50 for a CD's worth of
music, and nowhere-near the same quality).

Fourth, you don't actually BUY ringtones. They are first off, tied
to a specific phone, so if that phone dies, you lose all the
ringtones. If by some miracle the phone does not die, the ringtones
expire.

I have always made my own in iTunes; I just set the start and stop
time in the options setting and then export that 20-30 sec. clip and
do that for various 'possible' ring tones. Then I sync them to the
phone as ring tones. I think the shareware products are a little
'faster' in that you can more quickly find just the right start and
stop place, but really, it's not like I'm doing this on a daily basis.

iTunes, I've used it many time to make ringtones.

Find the song you want, then in the options, set the start time and
end time, then 'Convert' the track to MP3 and you will get just the
portion you want.

Yes, it's a slightly obnoxious process, but it works and works well
(I've made several mp3 ringtones this way).

I turn off stereo encoding and drop the bit rate to conserve space,
but that's for a RAZR.

Is there a way to make the sound fade, or do I need another program?

Re: Ringtones for iPhone

Would you mind giving somewhat more detailed step by step on this process? I get to the export step but don't get how to have the new file show up in the "Ringtones" folder so it'll sync to the iPhone. Perhaps I'm missing something (or a lot). Do you use something like iTone for the sync? Exporting to the Ringtones folder (~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Ringtones) doesn't work (shows up as a text file) nor does manually moving the file to the Ringtones folder.

thanks

Garageband can do that.
