Something more free than Web Crossing?

I have investigate Web Crossing with no small amount of interest as
TidBITS has taken it on in an increasing capacity. Its ability to merge
the blurry lines between email lists, blogs, chat rooms/boards, RSS
feeds, etc... is nothing short of amazing.

I'm curious if anyone has found/configured any of the many excellent
forum or blogging content management systems out there to provide
similar functionality to Web Crossing which, while impressive, is also
very expensive compared to free/open source alternatives.

Of particular interest to myself is the ExtraBITS ability to either
serve as a blog+comments or as a chat board/forum.

[All I can say is that during our extensive investigation, we found nothing that was anywhere nearly as well integrated, particularly on the email side. There is a free version called Web Crossing Express that is restricted in terms of volume of database accesses.]
