Apple Introduces iPod Touch, Wi-Fi iTunes Store, and new iPods

> So far, Apple has distributed over 600 million copies of iTunes

Statements like this have long bothered me. When I update three
instances of Mac iTunes and one of Windows iTunes later this week,
will Apple have "distributed" four more copies? There has been a lot
of updating going on.

> But people, you're paying twice for the same song!

I strongly suspect the artists (remember them--the folks the RIAA
pretends to collect money for) do a lot better on a ringtone sale
than on the sale of the underlying song--where their cut has to run
the gauntlet of the labels' "interesting" accounting.

New iPods: The Worst Ever!

I'm pretty much with Joe -- back in my dark college days I used to walk around in dangerous places with a Walkman, but I've grown out of that (at least the walking around in dangerous places with a Walkman parts).

Between my partner and I, though, we've had seven iPods! She had the original 5 GB (a colleague convinced her she could use it for backups and whatnot, and I think the college even paid for it). Then we bought a 40 GB 4G iPod (etched with "Portable Reality Distortion Field Generator" on the back) to be able to carry a bunch of music in the car. And she's had two Shuffles, the gumstick one and the first small aluminum one (after losing the other one). And she ended up with a Nano as part of a deal involving her new laptop. And we each have an iPhone.

My partner uses hers when powerwalking. I sometimes take mine into work and plug it into my laptop and use iTunes. And we use some of them in the car. (Radio? What's that?) We even sometimes plug one into the stereo or a set of portable speakers for dedicated listening. But I don't find myself listening to them with headphones very often.

Re: Apple Introduces iPod Touch, Wi-Fi iTunes Store, and new iPods

I, too, seem to align with Joe, but then my college days were 35 years ago. Everyone else in my family has an iPod of one shape or another, even my wife. She has a cell phone, too.

But I am the only one with a Palm (a dying m505) and a Newton 120 that preceded that.

So here I am, lusting after an iPod Touch, hoping that I can get it to serve as a replacement for my Palm...

I have a Tungsten T5, which I also wouldn't mind replacing. However,
the iPod Touch just won't do it so long as there isn't an email program
on it. Even though VersaMail on the Palm is really poor (doesn't do
HTML at all well, and has a too small upper limit on message size), I
still often load my email from my IMAP servers to the Palm so I can read
what I can when I have some time to kill and can't connect via WiFi.
When I get back home, I sync up with the IMAP servers and delete what
I've read. Until I can do that on an iPod Touch, I'm not interested in
having one.

Based on Apple's stated position on 3rd party apps for the iphone,
and given that the Touch is just an iPhone without the, well, phone;
I expect we will see a IMAP mail client for the touch any day now.

<check google>

OK, well not today, perhaps.

That said, i think I am going to go ahead and get a touchpod (much
better name, so I'll use it) and for the time being, use webmail.

I hadn't focused on the iPod touch. I was assuming it was an iPhone
without the phone. But it seems to me characteristic of Apple to also
take out a mail program that already exists and that works with WiFi.
Over the years, I've had a lot of frustration with the way Apple will
frequently take one or two features that should be on all the models
and only put that feature on the most expensive model.

Re: Apple Introduces iPod Touch, Wi-Fi iTunes Store, and new iPods

Along with an email client, iChat and no microphone are obviously purposeful omissions on Apple's part. iChat plus wifi is a 'phone' especially on campuses and in industrial parks with high coverage. Let's call that a wiPhone. ;) I wonder if there's a deal with AT&T to omit iChat/mikes on non-cell iFamily platforms.

I'd like to know if the wifi on the iTouch is a function that is 'off' most of the time or has a low power sleep mode to help preserve battery life.

This has almost certainly got to have something to do with their contract with AT&T. My opinion.

I have a Palm Tx which I absolutely hate. The screen doesn't even
align correctly. It is buggy, and needs constant rebooting. Bleh!

This is my third or fourth Palm. I got the PalmPilot III (or maybe it
was just Palm III by then) and it became part of my brain. I use to
joke "This is your brain. This is your brain on two double AA
batteries."

Unfortunately, something happened along the way. Sync'ing with the
Mac is awful, and I can't get it to sync to my PC at all with
Microsoft Outlook. I hate the new Graffiti II and angry that I can't
use the original Graffiti that I learned over the last decade. (I
could write about 20 words per minute). What use to be my constant
companion now sits in the bottom of my satchel.

The iPod Touch (maybe it should just be iTouch?) would be great if
they had a notepad, an appointment book, and a address book. Funny is
that these are on my current iPod (although I can't edit the entries)
and they are on the iPhone. Apple stripped down the iPod Touch a bit
too much. They should have just removed the phone and leave it at that.

I haven't rebooted mine in two years, maybe you've got a faulty one?

But you can:

I did this the day I bought my TX, and haven't looked back.
